shop manual says to torque 340's to 95 ft lbs.. why is it it doesn't warp 340 blocks with no issues with gaskets, heads or blocks? 273 is basically same block with smaller bore.
I have new arp bolts to use this time around ... arp recommends 100 ft lbs and there special lube. I'll be using a composite gasket 318 with a small fire ring also . that mr gasket 1121 has such a large bore ... it's almost to the edge of the valley ... with a 3/8" gap all the way around...
two different compression engines.. do you really think 85ft lbs is going to hold back a 10.5 compression engine that spins 6000 rpms ? 340's were 10 to one compression and they have 95 ft lbs torque. what gives? can't believe everything you read .
chilton 273 318 head torque spec says 85 ft lbs in low compression engines but does not mention what it would be for the commando ....just says 273 318 .. it says the 340 is 95 ft lbs. wouldn't you think the commando with 10.5 compression will be torqued at 95 ft lbs also like the 340...
Thought I'd bring this up for concerns .. look at the block deck and you can see it has rough cut and not perfectly flat. could this be why it keeps blowing head gaskets? the other block I'm thinking about using has a smooth flat deck surface .
Yeah thanks guys !! that's what it appears like.. warped block .. I check it with a straight edge that last two times the head was off and appeared to be in tolerances. this time it it blew on #2 and 4 again. last time was on #6 .I have another good block to start over with .
ok A few hours ago I did a compression check most cylinders were 150-160 # 2 cyl had 50# dead cyl. so took valve cover off check valve gear looks all fine . bumped engine over.... looked thru the drain back areas in the head seen the head gasket pertruding out Buldging .. when...
If you all have been watching on my 273 commando engine build I have replaced the head gasket 3 times in the past two years on the pass side ... searching my posts you will the details on different topics ....
So.......... I put on approx couple hundred hard miles since I installed the mr...
UPDATE UPDATE ! I put on approx couple hundred hard miles since I installed the mr gasket1112 head gaskets and had the head milled so they were flat . Now I have another issue... It is huffing smoke/ exhaust pressure out the valve cover filler holes. both sides . Just happened so will do...
Get rid of that carb.... try another
one.. the carb is dumping fuel. float adjustments . needle and seats pin hole in float . 6 mpg has nothing to do with timing or such in you case.
