If you did the ammeter bypass and still blowing fusible links most likely the issue lies in either the battery/alternator or starting circuit. You'll need a wiring diagram and a multimeter to find the short.
Hi Jimmy. The first thing you need to do is STOP! Disconnect the battery if you haven't already and don't go any further until you find a wiring diagram for your car and engine before you do any further damage.
You are most likely scaring away the pros (I'm not one) that are here with your...
'69 Barracuda. Steel hood, fiberglass scoop done by previous owner. 340 sixpack engine (air cleaner does not clear the hood). I would prefer the sixpack scoop though.
FWIW my horn staying on turned out to be melted wires at the bulkhead connector inside the car. The battery feed wire runs next to the horn wire and the battery feed wire started to melt and fused to it keeping the horn on. My fusible link went soon after and the problem was created at the ammeter.
^ That helps a lot!
It sounds like melted or chaffed (bared) wires from the engine harness bulkhead on the inside of the car. Look at the wires where the bulkhead connector enters the interior through the firewall. If you have an ammeter also make sure the connections are good there and it's...
I found the exact problem with my engine after years of driving it. No idea who built this engine. It didn't cause any problems but I corrected it once I found it. Just check for any signs of wear damage that might cause issues.
Here's a Checklist:
....Carburetor opens and closes without any binding?
....At idle, throttle valve lever is forward?
....Carburetor opens and closes smoothly from inside and outside vehicle?
....Throttle valve lever on transmission is all the way back during wide open throttle...
The bouchillon cables work great as well. I used their transmission kickdown cable for my 340 sixpack as the linkage was missing when I got my car. The cables come with brackets and accessories for many configurations. Products: TorqueFlite Kickdown Cable Kit - Bouchillon Performance Engineering
I have a tire mix like yours Mike, wider for the back. Same issue, fronts are fine, rear are brown. It's a p*ss off! Can't find anything that says the issue has been corrected by Goodrich.
Thanks Jeff, the eBay set has two different covers (only one cover has the oil filler provision) unlike what the OP has. I guess the grommet will cover one for PCV use?
BTW the Accel wires are around $100 a set now.:wtf: I've had good luck with mine but my car isn't driven very much either. A mostly stock 318 won't need anything special or see any improvement with expensive wires IMO.
