Starting a TQ rebuild - tips and tricks?

I would not do any mods to that carb. They were so good as they came for a "72" 340.

Starting a TQ rebuild - tips and tricks?

You should be good with that carb leave the factory jetting and rods. About the only thing you should need to do is adjust the secondary air valve to open as quickly as you can without a bog. First carefully remove the bowl so you do not break off the alignment pins on the bottom of the bowl...

Did They Make Square Bore AVS Carbs Made That Only Had The Small Bolt Pattern On The Base Plate?

AVS carbs were the larger bolt pattern and large air cleaner opening. The small pattern and smaller air cleaner opening was used up to 1967 but still had the same mounting pads, so they would look the same with the narrower bolt pattern. Those mounting pads were used on all Carters from the...

    TQ questions

I would use the 9811s. It is calibrated for a 318. It should work the best with your combination. It has ported vacuum port for the distributor. Plug everything but PCV, vent tube, and distributor. I tend to use the KISS principle, so I would not use the 9265s there is too much complication...

    Thermoquad idling issues

If I remember correctly, you can use the choke from an International Harvester with a TQ, but you have to fab your own rod. I'll see if I have any pictures.

    Thermoquad idling issues

So you have a 4972 TQ for a 71 340 manual transmission. That is worth only $500-1,000. That is what I ran on my favorite 273, it would be the last I'd ever sell. The 6139 TQ is a 1972 340 automatic transmission carb, I've run this one also on a number of small blocks, one of the best. The...

    Thermoquad tuning on 318

TQs run lean, that is why they get great mpg. If you have a factory 72 intake, just use a factory choke. You can tune them to run like a fuel injected car if you take a little time. Or you can richen it up and get the same mpg everybody else gets.

    Thermoquad tuning on 318

Just revised my last post #33 from info on 6319s TQ to info 6139s TQ. Also should be brass floats set to 1 inch.

    Thermoquad tuning on 318

Lets cut to the chase here. Stock 318 with 72 340 TQ intake and supposedly stock 72 340 automatic TQ. The carb and intake should work perfectly in this application. Stock 6139s air valve adjustment is 1 turn. This assumes an original, complete, unmolested 6139s carb and choke. Not a fan of...

    Thermoquad tuning on 318

I would run a choke. I like the one from a 73 up truck since there is no electric heater. I'd be tightening up the secondary air valve 1/8 turn till the bog is gone. Pictures of the carb and choke side?

    Thermoquad Rods

The GM guys had the QuadraJet. You could get them for next to nothing. If you knew what you were doing they are the next best thing to a TQ. Chevy guys are cheap.

    Edelbrock LD4B - what's the operating range?

You probably need an old speed catalog to find what it was advertised. Better than a Performer, might be able to do the old Super Stock trick of milling the divider to 3/8 from the floor and gasket match. I'll see if it is listed in the old one I have.

Note about parts store rebuilt carbs

You are always better having someone rebuild your carb if it is a known good one. I avoid "rebuilt" ones, but an untouched carb been sitting for years, greasy are the best ones to start with. An original High Performance carb for your engine is best.

Rebuild or Replace 850 TQ for a Mild 340?

I have only bought a few new carbs in my life. Almost all rebuilt carbs ran very well without tight throttle shaft bushings. If set up right and adjustments made the throttle shafts would have to be very loose to make a difference. All my cars run 50 year old original Carter HP carbs.

Stock '69 318, t-quad vs q-jet vs holley vs edelbrock?

TQ's usually do not need any tuning, especially with what you want to do. Maybe secondary jets. Then it is just cleaning everything up and adjusting the secondary air valve so it won't bog. Make sure you get a TQ that is not frozen or has any stuck parts, like idle mixture adjusting screws...

Stock '69 318, t-quad vs q-jet vs holley vs edelbrock?

For all out cheap you can't beat an original TQ intake from 71 through early 80's. Be aware you will need different or modified kickdown linkage for your automatic transmission when switching from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel. Use a 340 throttle cable bracket. Have to agree with post #8 above on...

    THERMOQUAD INFORMATION>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

1974 High Performance 360 Automatic trans from a Valiant, Duster, Dart, Barracuda, Challenger, Road Runner or Charger. We always thought 1 3/8" primary carbs were 750 cfm and 1 1/2" primary carbs were 850 cfm. I does not really matter, they both run great. I always preferred the TQ's from HP...
