Help converting my 64 to 66 23 Spline 8A33 to an overdrive ?

Yes, the nice thing is you don’t have to change everything. Plus, if I don’t like how the O/D drives, I just pop the original A-833 back in. The more I do of the conventional “wisdom”, the more I just like the original stuff, for the most part. Nothing wrong with an A-833, a set of 3.23 gears...

Help converting my 64 to 66 23 Spline 8A33 to an overdrive ?

You must use a O/D mainshaft. The way I'd change your 64 to 67 A-833 to an O/D is to use your main housing and buy an O/D gear set, a 26 spline O/D main shaft, and a 26 spline A-Body tailshaft housing, and a 3-4 O/D shifter rod. That way it will just bolt in to what you have now. Assuming you...

    My 340 getting 6 mpg

mpg is only relevant for comparison when cruising at a constant speed on the highway for a decent distance, say 100 miles. Too many variables in town or stop and go traffic.

Advice around 170 slant carb and engine swap

I'm pretty sure you could use a 64 273 904, but you better beef it up for a Hot 360. And use an adapter in the crank for the small pilot torque convertor. Maybe call A & A transmission about converting a later trans to a cable shift.

Advice around 170 slant carb and engine swap

They are a high winding engine that can make plenty of power and get great mileage. I souped one up for my 64 Barracuda 4 speed when gas went south in the 70's. A whole different engine than a 225.

Advice around 170 slant carb and engine swap

Try rebuilding the carb first. The kit should be cheap and they are simple carbs. I love 170 slant six engines.

My 66 formula S, 4 speed came with a 7 1/4 sure grip. My 67 Formula S, 4 speed came with an 8 3/4 sure grip 741 case. Both came with 3.23 gears.

    273 or 225?

To all of you that are fixated on the engine. It's not about the engine. IF a V8 swap was to be made, getting a donor car makes the most sense, especially an early A. You swap the whole drive train, you have a radiator, exhaust manifolds, HD suspension, gas pedal, accelerator cable bracket...

    273 or 225?

I would stick with a 904 in an Early A. The 727 usually needs to "clearanced" with a grinder or hammer to fit an Early A, not worth the extra tightness and goobering up your Early A. But you will need a 66 or 67 V8 904 or use what you have if you buy the 65. You should be able to find a...

    273 or 225?

I'm not being arrogant, have you had or done an early A. It takes more than a motor. Just because I prefer one motor over another does not matter, it is my opinion. We all started where he is now. If one wanted to swap a V8 for a /6, the best advice I could give, is to get a donor car...

    273 or 225?

That looks great. I'd do that in a heartbeat, looks unmolested. Been doing this stuff all my adult life. ALL the stuff to do a V8 transplant in a 66 dart, starting with a complete 273 drive train. I mean everything is there. Plus wagon rear springs and torsion bars. I could care less about...

    273 or 225?

I trust my experience, but I am not there. I am not the OP, it is his decision. I have one 318 Magnum, but will probably never be built. I did like your offer to help the OP. The whole donor car is a huge plus to me if doing that swap.

    273 or 225?

I always assume the engine is shot, but rebuildable, I prefer untouched engines anyway. I have fixed, if possible, too many "rebuilt" engines. 273's were pretty much bulletproof unless run without oil or coolant, unlike newer engines where cracked heads are more than common. I have never had...

2nd, I have one all but done on an engine stand. Having run almost all Mopar engines in a 4 speed car. Keep in mind I am a street high performance everyday driver. I want performance and mpg as I would, and still do, drive from the east coast to South Dakota and Nebraska on a yearly basis...

Or just run the 65 drivetrain as is since he will have it. Adjust the valves, set the points, adjust the timing, make sure the carb is good, and the vacuum advance is working.

    273 or 225?

Having hot rodded both engines, I'd do the 273 swap in a heartbeat since you have a 273 donor car where you can get all the special V8 parts. The only problem, and not really a problem, with a 65 273 is finding an intake manifold and there are work arounds for that as well. A 65 273 should...

    Need help 1965 Barracuda 273 2bbl carb

The Carter BBD 2 barrel carb is nothing special. You can use any 273 or 318 2 barrel carb from 1964 through 1970. Valve covers are the same. The best in my mind would be from a 273 from 1964 to 1966, I like the stove pipe breathers and PCV valve. But any 273, 318, 340, or 360 valve covers...

    WHAT TYPE OF OIL??

You need zinc for the cam and tappets. I have 300,000 on a 273 with conventional oil, Valvoline racing 20w50, changes every 3,000 miles. Still runs like new. How long do you want your engine to last?

    exhaust woes ......1973 340 into a 1965 barracuda

I slightly ported the exhaust manifolds on the top and sides for the larger ports. I ran J heads that had the larger exhaust ports. The later 360 heads had smaller ports, but had a longer "face" for the EGR port. That face can hit the drivers side exhaust manifold and crack it, so check it...
