Do you have emission testing? If so that would be a problem. Here in NY 20 year old vehicles aren't tested for emissions. Sometimes things might not be able to be done to our cars.

My 71 Cuda had a Hurst stick and bolted right to the tranny. I don't think an adapter was necessary for it. But I guess it depends on what tranny you wind up with. Belhousing was about $300.

The bottom line was, this was another way for Mopar to save money by not using a jam nut to lock the adjuster. Think about the pounding the adjuster
takes, especially on a solid lifter cam, it's no wonder they start to fail.
Why not run the oil pump drive with a drill, rotating the engine with valve covers off to see what's going on instead of pulling intake. Also will be able to tell oil pressure on the gauge. Make sure you use at least 1/2 chuck drill for the power.
