Help setting timing and vac advance

First timer setting timing up…. Decided to replace my mechanical advance distributor with the vac advance unit below from Jegs. My plan is to adjust the mechanical advance of the distributor to about 20 so I will have 16 initial and 36 total and keep the 2 silver springs so timing is “all in”...

Stupid Oil Pump Spitting Oil Now

Just got the power steering box to quit leaking and now the oil pump is spitting oil everywhere. Looks like the seal from the pump to block is compromised. Used a brand new Fel Pro gasket with Hi tak. Bout 60 miles on the new build. Guess I don’t really have a question just always something man!!!!!

    Adjust curve 440 Source distributor?

Actually does matter quite a bit. I bought this as the quickest easiest cheapest way to get this motor running before winter.

    Adjust curve 440 Source distributor?

Bought a 440 Source distributor and need to reduce the curve from 25. Did not come with paperwork and haven’t heard back from 440 Source in weeks. Can anyone point me in the right direction to change the curve? Billet Distributor - RB Engine

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

I’ll get it up to temp today. I know I got some coolant in the cylinders when I pulled the heads. I cleaned them out as best I could. Figured it would have burned out quickly though.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

I did. New gasket with rtv between the block and valley pan and rtv around the intake ports between the pan and intake manifold.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Just cranked it up again, idle was sticking to about 900 but then after I revved it up a few times idle jumped to 2,000. Looked like white smoke but hard to tell in the garage light while it’s dark out.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Thank you for the info. I’ll run a compression test and have to look up how to run the cooling test. I have no concerns regarding the head gasket install but was definitely easier with the block on the stand versus in the vehicle.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Funny you say that, I labeled the valves with sharpie before I sent them out 1-8 and when I got them beck he put them back in opposite odds were in even and vice versa.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Nothing has changed other than the valve seal bosses were cut lower and narrower then new seals installed by a machine shop and built back up by them. White/grey smoke out the tailpipes, pretty thick smoke too. Definitely doesn’t seem like steam.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Yes sir e Bob. Oil pressure was at 42 but idle was also super low. I was having a tough time adjusting it. Seemed like the idle adjust screw wasn’t even working. My mixtures screws are both out 1 3/4 turns. I would try to crank idle up it kept wanting to be low like 500 rpm.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Probably should have left that part out. I just have clamps on the exhaust for now and thing I have some small leaks near the header to exhaust transition.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

I had ZERO smoke before I popped the heads and took them to get the seals cut and redone. I have a K and N filter on the drivers valve cover and a 3/8 hose from the passenger cover to the carb PCV inlet.

Engine now smoking after new valve seals

Hey all. I have a brand new 440, has 15 minute break in and 5 miles drive time. I popped the valve covers and saw some valve seals were getting shredded. Otherwise, car was running and driving phenomenal. So popped the heads off, to the machine shop, they cut the valve stem seats down and...

Valve seals tore on break in

Just talked to the machine shop. They’ll disassemble, cut the valve guides down, install new seals, reassemble. Now I just have to find some different seals to use. Any recommendation recommendations? I would want to go more narrow than the current ones for more clearance.

Valve seals tore on break in

These are what I ordered. They fit great but a hair too tall so it seems. Or not set correctly.

What did he do to correct it? Machine the guide bosses down and use a shorter seal?

Valve seals tore on break in

Well I pre lives the valve shafts with WD 40 but not assembly lube. Just double checked and they are 3/8 seals. And we’re not difficult to install over the valves.

Valve seals tore on break in

I didn’t use the little valve stem tool. I didn’t have one. Dammit man! The rubber didn’t feel dry or cracked. But who knows.

Valve seals tore on break in

Clearance from the seal to the inner spring is very tight. It seems the top just tore. I didn’t like those damn springs/bands from the get go I knew I should have left them off.

Valve seals tore on break in

Hey all, I just broke in my 440 which went great except for it tore the tops off 3 valve seals….so far. I had some small pieces laying in the heads. I’m not worried about the blue rubber, I am worried about these tension springs/bands that are now riding on my valves and their potential to break...
