    Not head related but the steel crank 340 that came with my car (supposedly ran) has one cylinder .030” over with a different type of piston than the other 7 standard bore ones!

    ~450hp from stock stroke 340?

    A friend of mine put ported Eddy magnum heads on a stock stroke 340. Compression is 10.8:1. Don’t remember the cam but it did 435 hp on the dyno.

    What's Up With This Picture?

    I believe they painted the motors after the exhaust manifolds were installed. The overspray burned off after the engines were fired up.

    340. Cast date is May 29, 1973. Came with a cast crank and lower compression pistons.

    Any truth to the practice of BLACK painted parts dissipating heat better?

    I remember an article in Hot Rod or Car Craft magazine years ago on this. If I remember correctly, they painted a SBC black and checked under hood temperatures and it seemed to be cooler.

    Put a match to a small quantity and see if it ignites quicker than just plain oil. That will tell you if it’s water or gas.

    Sure there were 2.02 J heads. Was someone on here questioning that? My 340 has 2.02 J heads-not sure if they were originally or were upgraded at some point.

    core 'revision' number...BS? BUSTED!!

    I always figured it was a box or mold type number, similar to the cavity number commonly seen on molded plastic parts. But, I’m not real familiar with casting processes either, so I could be way off base!!

    They took the methylene chloride out of it. Pretty nasty stuff, but it made it work!

    340 intake on a 318?

    Port size on the 340 intake is likely larger than the 318 heads. What heads you got on the motor? If they’re J heads, you should be OK
