What's a better substitute/alternative to STAINLESS PRW 1.6 roller rockers?

-Aluminum has a quicker fatigue life.

- PRW's are chinese, might not be well built, and I want to build a reliable, High RPM capable motor - not worth risking my money on one weak link :)

What's a better substitute/alternative to STAINLESS PRW 1.6 roller rockers?

Small block Mopar LA heads

thank you!

Cat, are you back. I get no response when I email over the water.

I run the SS PRW rockers on street 496 strokers.

The small block ones are the same. The only problems are, they are full of metal chips and must be deburred, the threads should have taps and dies run over and through them and they should be carefully washed, lubed and reassembled. I have to do this with all rocker assemblies I use, regardless of manufacture, even the Harland Sharp rockers, that I would use as the first substitute for the PRW in a more high performance application.

I even have to go through the same thing with T&D rocker assemblies even though they give instructions not to. T&D says to install their rockers without cleaning them. They claim they are cleaned and lubed already. NOT! I've found the same problems with the T&D rockers as with all the others.

Im building my 360 and although this is my first rebuild and my opinion isnt worth much as a rebuilder, I can tell a quality piece when I see it, Ive got the PRW 1.6 aluminium shaft and rockers going in mine. They are beautiful, I could be wrong, but they look american made to me, very good for a street motor. I will clean and relube them as the rollers do seem to be stiff till you get them turned a few times, like IQ52 says it's likely good practice with any company.

i have the Hughes Engines 1.5 rockers on my 318 street car...been running/driving for almost a year....zero problems...

If I'm not mistaken PRW makes the Hughes rocker arms.

That may be true. About 18 mos ago there was a shortage of their rockers. I tried to get another set and Kevin was telling me they were looking for someone else to manufacture them. I needed a set so I went with the PRW 1.6 stainless instead on TT engine. Solid roller open pressures are 510lbs Closed is 140 ish. Guys are using the PRW's with good results, haven't heard of any failures.

Hughes Engines claims there rockers are made in USA....

I see that on their website. I read their rockers were PRW rockers in a magazine a month or 2 ago. Maybe the magazine was incorrect. Don't remember if it was Mopar Action or Mopar Muscle, one of them said it. I'll do some looking and see if I can find it.

BTW: I wasn't knocking them at all when I said that. In fact a buddy of mine runs a set of PRW's on his 418 and it has a pretty stout solid cam and they have worked fine for nearly 3 yrs of hard driving.

I know. :) i too would like to know who makes the rockers for Hughes...I thought they were making them in house at one time...maybe not. either way, they are a nice rocker from my experiences...I have 1.5's on my 318, and 1.6's on my 408...id buy another set. LOL

What I cannot understand is Hughes advertising that their $125 cryo treatment will increase the strength of their alum rockers 3X. Why don't they just do it as part of the manufacturing process then if it improves them that much.

I just put a set of Hughes 1.6 rockers on my 416 with 585# on the nose of the solid roller cam. We'll see how they hold up. They had to be clearanced to clear the 1.4 diameter springs / retainer.

My guess is it's the extra cost. Most people don't run solid rollers so they don't need it and things are so competetive nowadays with all the cheap overseas parts that Hughes sells them without the treatment to keep the cost down.

^^ most likely....in my application with a mild hydraulic cam and lighter spring pressures...the cryo treatment would not be needed, therefore, i would not wanna pay the extra 125 for the cryo treatment. :)

Anybody know if my PRW 1.6's are gonna need to be clearanced to fit stock stock la360 heads? They look real close but havent done a test fit yet till the heads are finished.

Ive never had to clearance a Rocker to clear the springs. I tell my machinist what parts I am going to run and for some odd reason the Rockers always clear the springs. Guys sometimes need to do this, I just never have.

I like my comp pro mags. Used them before and never a problem.

Too many different spring diameters and retainer designs to say. It's simple to mock them up and see.

I'm using the aluminium ones, I may be replacing the springs anyway so I'll hopfefully avoid any grinding, I'd hate to ruin that beautiful finish on them.
