Hey All, just came across a guy with a 340 marine engine. Says it came out of a 1968 Lyman.
Anybody know anything about these? Are they the same as the 340's that came in cars? I read on one site that it may run in counter clockwise rotation?

Someone just asked this the other day. I don't know. A reverse rotation Chrysler is easy to spot if it's complete, it has a big cast iron thrust bearing assembly under the distributor. This is because the thrust on the distributor is reversed. The crank will have the oil slingers for the rear main seal reversed.

Some people think reversed engines come only in twins, but I have seen singles that were reversed. By the way, the marine crown calls a reversed engine "right hand"

Here's some dope on a 225 (HP not CID) which is a 318LA

If you fiddle around a minute, you can download the 318/360 service manual here, free

They also marketed a 440 six pack

they are mostly the same. usually different cam specs, brass core plugs. if the boat had 2 engines-1 is standard rotation, 1 is reverse rotation.

I just took a look at it and couldn't resist buying at only $100. This one does run clockwise, has a very unusual shaped 8qt oil pan and the intake carb mounting flange is cut at an angle to allow the carb to sit level when in the boat. Date coded 3-16-73 and of course painted corporate blue.

was it cooled with a closed system or raw water? if raw water was it fresh water or salt water?

Cooled with a closed system and spent it's life in the finger lakes central NY. I'd like to sell some of the parts I don't need like intake and oil pan if anyone knows of a Chrysler Marine enthusist.

I could see someone using those exhaust manifolds for a turbo build

The 340 marine engines I have seen had 318 cylinder heads on them stock... YMMV

Is it a steel or aluminum oil pan somewhere right around 73-74 they went to a cast aluminum oil pan. Have the block sonic checked before you put any money in it, most marine engines are freshwater cooled and even in freshwater they get a lot of rust in the water passages in the block, it should have a cast iron intake and a cast iron timing chain cover. Marine engines used the early pre 69 water pump all the way thru 1985 when they stopped producing marine engines.

Did that with a reverse 440 a few years ago. List the marine items on e bay they are like gold! Change the oil pump also hence reverse rotation and get the crank polished and life is good.

Is that the engine you put in your car and got stopped for doing 110 mph in reverse? LOL

There's been more'n one parts store guy / mechanic "back in the day" was confused when trying to get a generator off a Corvair to work on a conventional engine, or vice versa.

Your correct - it has a heavy cast timing chain cover and the oil pan looks cast as well. I pulled the heads and just as the previous owner said, it was completely rebuilt 2 seasons ago. Very clean inside, new bearing and soft plugs. Standard 4.040 bore that still has signs of honing.

When I was young one of my uncles had some foreign job of a car
The speedometer was a very strange design...the needle was stationary, and behind it was a wheel which turned to display the proper speed
Only issue was, when you drove it in reverse that wheel would turn backwards, showing you were doing 120 while backing up

(Couldn't find a video of one backing up, but this is what the speedometer looks like...the tach worked the same way)

It was a citroen CX

What would you want for the intake?

I'd stUOTE="RustyRatRod, post: 1971315752, member: 14960"]What would you want for the intake?[/QUOTE]
I'd sell the intake for 50 plus the ride. I can ship through my business account that should be reasonable considering the weight.
