A-999 Swap and Information

Hi there,

Got a A999 transmission out of a 1989 B250 van. It's a lock-up unit and was tied to a 318. I've read about the advantages on this unit but im not really sure how good or bad it is the fact that its a lock-up transmission. Besides that, there are 4 wires attached to the trans (3 for neutral switch and one which I have no clue). I'm going to swap it in my Duster and haven´t been lucky finding information about the blue wire I have no clue for what it is used for. Any pro/con's on the fact its a lock-up or any idea what should I do with the blue wire w/ white line? Any help appreciatted.

the blue wire could either be a temp sensor or maybe a control wire for the lock up converter... reads pressure to send signal to converter??
 
Thought about that but not sure since there's no good info on the web. If it's a trans temp sensor that'll be cool. Could add a gauge to monitor that?

Anyone done this swap before?
 
999 trans is the hot ticket. Good link on your particular transmission here.

Blue wire may be connected to an 'unlock solenoid', but don't quote me on that, just found that by looking around on the net. Does actually look like a temp sensor. Read here.

I haven't messed with lockup transmissions but I thought the lockup function was all hydraulic on the older transmissions. To me that looks like a temp sender that someone screwed into the low/reverse servo test port.

BTW: The 3 wire neutral connector doesn't use all 3 wires for neutral safety. Only the middle (brown wire) is for neutral safety. The outer wires (white and purple) are for the reverse lights.
 
Pro/con's for the lockup are

Pro's: lockup gives you lower cruise rpm's and better fuel mileage

Cons: the lockup converter isn't very performance oriented. Not a lot of companies making performance converters for it. Good for lower hp cars only.
 
Can a 904 be built into a non-lockup A-999 clone?

I believe all you just have to do is swap in the 999 planetary gear sets, sun gear, and clutch carriers. They are what determines the gear ratios and torque carrying capacity. A real good upgrade to do at the same time is install a multi return spring set into the front clutch carrier in place of the factory single wound spring.

If I've missed anything someone please correct me.

Actually, it's not that simple! Better to find an actual 999 but unfortunately they are as rare as hen's teeth. I looked for two years to find one.

You can put a low gear set into an earlier 904 but that's about it for later parts going into an earlier trans. The real beauty of the 999 is the 5 clutch drum but to install one in a regular 904 requires a lot of careful and hard-to-find parts matching.

Thanks so much for the link! That cleared it up big time. Someone was trying to tell me it was as simple as slapping in the 5 disc clutch. Glad I found out. Sorry to have hijacked this thread
 
i forget what the blue wire connection is from,,,but i have one of those lock up tranys in my dodge street rod, that wire is not hooked up and the lock up is hydrulic,,,that trans also has a low first gear, i run down the road at 80 MPH with the A/C on 323 gears at over 18 MPG with a 241 dodge red ram hemi,,,,hard tranny to find also

The main reason most people want the 999 is the lower ratio first gear, not the 5 disc front clutch.
 
ah well. is there anyway to get the lower gearing without finding an A-999 ?

My best guess would be to call www.wittrans.com and see if they have the parts. They sell used parts but only list the 904. I'm sure they have more than is listed on their website. Make sure and get every part associated with the planetary gearsets. Every washer, snap ring, the sun gear, and gearsets. Anything you see in that area on the parts diagram.

Yeah, the link rmchrgr posted really cleared things up. Thank you so much for the help. I wanna build a stout transmission to house my reverse manual valvebody Coyote Jack gave me and so it can handle some time at Road Atlanta

Look on the My Mopar trans guide reference to get the PK # number off the driver's side pan rail and then go get one. Bet you could find one laying in the dirt somewhere...
 
great tranny for a cruiser, or street rod, there are performance convertors out there for these,,,

ok went back i see what you meen 7 pages,,,,the pk# i have to check beging with 450.. the last ones on that chart are 441 i think/COLOR]

Strange. Very strange. It may be a remanufactured transmission if thats even possible.
 
i dont think a re-man would change the serial numbers on the pan rail,, i just trying to check the year,,, im sure its newer then its thought to be,
 
post some pics up and some pics of the numbers and a measurment of the tailshaft in Transmission and Drivetrain Tech and Im sure some one will be able to help. I'll try my darndest I know that much

So far for tonight, all it seems to pull up is an A-500 transmission.:angry7: I'll keep looking tomorrow
