A-999 Swap and Information

-
Well,it turns out this trans needs a direct drum, rear drum & rear support. Does anyone have any of these parts? I don't mind having a lock up for a lil better mileage

so what did the 999s come in so i can start trying to locate one

thanks

late 70's to late 80's f bodies, vans & trucks. It looks like a 904 but has a blue wire going into the trans on the ds

Is that the only way to identify them? I ask because there is the 998 that looks like a 904 and some of them (but not all) have lockup and they all have the heavy duty components (4 pinion planetaries, 4 disc drums) like a 999 but they don't have the low first gear. Their in between a 904 and 999 if you will. I don't know how to tell them apart on the outside nor do I have any numbers for them to identify them, just when I get them apart I know how to verify the low first gear set.

Here are the non-lockup 999 PK#s which can be found on the driver's side pan rail:

'74-'75 3681844
'76-'77 4028465
'78 4028878

(PK#s starting with 44 and up are from the '80s.)

The above units were found behind 360 powered passenger cars as a 'heavy duty' version of the 904. '78 was the first year they went to a lockup trans so if you have one of those units, you would want to look at the end of the input shaft to see if it has the machined tip on the end.

Pretty much anything from 78-up was a lockup if it was in a passenger car, however, it's my understanding that some trucks and vans after '78 may have recieved a non lockup 998-999. Those are probably harder to find than the pass car ones. I mean how many 360 powered trucks or vans had a 904 in them?

This is the #pk4058398 on a tranny that I have in the garage. I believe it is a lockup 999, is that correct?

Could be, looks like an '81 model year unit.

Once again, here is the MyMopar trans. Reference guide PDF link:

http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/transguide.pdf

Your trans is listed, towards the bottom when the list gets into the '80s. It says 8-318/A904 "Hvy Dty" next to the part #. They also clearly list a 999 for trucks in that year so yours may actaslly be a 998 variant with a 4 clutch drum. Not sure though, I'm not an expert.

Sadly mine doesn't show up in that list & mine had the 5 clutches

OK,now I just need to find a front/direct drum, rear drum & a rear support for mine. Anyone have it laying around?

What kinda direct drum are you lookin for? I think I have a few.

I just got one of these trannies out of a 84 dodge. It came with a 318 that I wanted is the tranny worth any $$$$

I need the dished 5 clutch direct/forward drum,rear/reverse drum (for lock up,tall spline) & rear support

As far as I know 904 came behind 273 and /6, 998 were behind 318 in cars, 999 were behind 360 from 74 till it was replace by the A500 in A,B,C,F,M,J body cars and light trucks and vans. The 2.74 low gear set was used in 904,998,and 999 in 1978 through the late 80's to help cars get moving with 2.45 rear gears. There were two 999 sold through Mopar Perf. p4130400 with man v.b. and 2.45 first gear, p4529688 with 2.74 first gear. The 74&75 A999 part# pn3681844, 76&77 is pn4028465, 78 non lock up is pn4028878, 78&79 lock up pn4028815,4058111,4130515,4130645 I don't have any numbers after 1979. Hope this will help some of you in your search for trans and low gear sets.

There are 2 81 Imperials and 1 85 diplomat in a yard near me. I'm debating robbing the trans's from them

Most likely they are lockup if that matters. They probably have the low gear sets and either a 4 (998) or 5 clutch (999) front drum but... the lockup stuff does not work with non-LU units, the parts don't match. The drum and input shaft are very different and the sealing rings are in different places.

Generally speaking, the only vehicles that had a 999 were 360 equipped. If either of those cars were 318, the units are probably 998s.

Check the #s on the pan rails to be sure.

I went with a 999 transmission and the Transgo stage 1 shift kit. I wanted a lockup converter as my rear axle ratio is 3:73.1 and I wanted to pick up the rpm reduction I get with the lockup. If you put that converter in a pre-68 engine the converter nose is smaller. I had a custom converter built for mine, and I did install the GearVendors OD unit. My transmission builder was pleased as the 999 has a lower first gear than the 904 and is also stouter internally than the 67 904. I should know the results in June if there is any justice on the planet.

I did get my 999 built and installed but have yet been able to drive it. I did lay down some nice marks and got it sideways from just a pedal stomp in D though. It hasn't been together in 3 years so now I'm waiting on my body guy to work his magic which will take another 6 months.
