hedman "tight tube" hedders?

-
i picked up the tight tube headers as well for my 67 notch, got done with the easy part, leads off crossover pipe back into mufflers...now tommorrow will be the fun part the collectors to the crossover leads....

Mine just came in today-I dropped the passenger side in no problems, but noticed the reducer aims straight at the idler arm...I have some scrap pipe hanging out and a 110V MIG, so I can probably fix something up till I run to the exhaust shop. The driver side was a little more difficult...had to loosen the engine mount and tilt it up a couple inches so it would clear the steering gear, but they look pretty good. The Summit dual exhaust kit with x-pipe ought to be in tomorrow, so maybe I can get most of it hung before the weekend.

Also finally retrofitted the high-torq late model starter-if you haven't done it yet-well worth the time expended.

As soon as I get it to the exhaust shop, I should be able to talk them into letting me underneath while it's on the lift so I can take a couple of good pictures. The only unfortunate part for me is that I bought the Summit 2.5" header back kit along with an x pipe, and all that will be mandrel bent piping-they don't have that capability unless they hack and weld stuff together. So, it won't look near as pretty as Jerry's setup...neither will the rest of the car since mine is in dire need of new suspension and lots of tlc...but, anyway...

I have them on my Barracuda. You have to do some tight turns but you can get them over your steering in 2.5" pipe. The guy who did mine was cursing but they look great. I'll try to get some pictures up.

This is the drivers side, passengers is easy

Hmm, I was just going to go under like Jerry did-if nothing else, I'll have to at least keep my temp head pipe on until I get it to the exhaust shop...if I don't, it would cook the bushing right out of the idler arm. Do you happen to have a pic of the right side??

Passengers side just goes straight back, but tight, drivers side heads left straight away to miss the starter then back

I just ordered a set a couple of days ago. Looks like Summit is back ordered. They will drop ship on the 23rd, so they say.

Ok, I dropped the car off this morning after work-he called me back a couple hours ago and was pretty worn out from fabbing it up. He said I picked a great day to drop off such a project as he only had three calls all day. IMO, he did a great job and the pictures don't do it justice. I know the driver side pipe looks a little off, but these are pre-bent sections from a Summit 2.5" kit and their X pipe kit...I also bought some pieces from Columbia River Mandrel Bending since his shop doesn't have the capability to do that. He said the front side alone was about 4 hours worth of cutting, tacking, fitting, then welding...sounds about right since that's about how much sleep I got.

www.proexhaust.com here in little ol' Abilene...anyway, enjoy and feel free to comment.

...here's a couple more. Unfortunately, my wife isn't off work yet so I couldn't pick up the car...but when he called and said "man, you gotta come down here and take a look at this thing if you can-get a ride-whatever, but you gotta come down here." I almost think he was amazed at his own handy work. Regardless, he did a good job-nothing hits. There's a couple close spots on the front side as y'all can see, but it all clears.

Looks sweet. I like how you ran the pipes off the headers and keeping above the steering linkage.

Yeah-fabber did a helluva job there. I just picked it up about two hours ago after my wife got off work. Everything is great-no interference with steering or suspension-to include rear shocks, and no scraping so far.

The only bad thing I can tell is I'm able to more clearly hear and discern the death noises emitting from the poor tired old 318-if I didn't know any better, I'd say it was about to spin a rod bearing. But, now that I have a good exhaust, I can press forward getting my 5.2 swap back underway.

Looks good.My only advice would be to get a heat shield to keep some heat off that starter,it's going to get very hot in the summer. If you can get the shield that has insulation one one side and put that side on the starter it should be enuff.

I'll probably order that tonite-good call.

I tried the dougs headers on my 340 with p/s and eddy heads. I couldn't get them to clear the steering coupler. Anyone have any ideas?

Hey do you get any "drone" from your set up. Mine has no crossover & the drone is a bit hard to live with. If you have none I think a crossover will cure mine.

Well, there is some, but it's not as bad as it was before, and it's certainly not offensive. However, I think it has more to do with the type of mufflers used. My Wife's '04 Mustang has an X pipe as well with 2 chamber flows, and around 19-2100rpm, it'll make you simple-minded after about 100 miles. What rpm are you getting the drone?

Edit: I can tell you this much: I don't have a tach, so I can't really confirm what rpm this thing runs at highway speeds, but most of what I hear is wind noise.

Did we ever figure out if these would work with the short ratio steering arms?

Please forgive my ignorance here-what are the differences with the short ratio arms?

They are longer than the standard arms. They hit on most Abody headers.

Though they apparently fit with a big block and shumacher headers, so i wonder how that is routed?

With the way he routed the pipes, there's actually more room than what it looks like, but it is still kinda snug. Depending on how much longer they are, you'd probably still be fine to route them above the steering...even if you did have to move them, you'd only have to extend the longitudinal pipe an inch or so. There's ample clearance with mine in that axis...it's all based on whatever you or your chosen exhaust shop can do. Feel free to copy and take those pictures for reference if you'd like. I can tell you you'll need about 6 ea 180* U bends so the fab can be done to clear the steering parts unless you have a shop in mind with a mandrel bender. Beyond that, they can just do pretty much standard 2.5" stuff.
