Suggestions for muscle car sound muffler without drone

-
i have dyno max 3'' on my car and only after 2000 miles the baffels are rattiling that bad i dont even want to drive it sounds like **** and is hard on the head when driveing. other than that when new they sounded good with no or little drone.

Do you have the Dynomax VT? If so I was concerned about them rattling. Moving parts in a muffler worries me. Someone posted a reply he got from Dynamax about the VT rattling in another thread. Then said you need to have a cross connection to avoid it.

I have the Thrush version of the Flowmasters, 2.5" mandrel from header collectors. Nothing attached at the end of the muffler, so exit in front of the axle until I get around to doing the tailpipes. Hopefully they will help, I forgot how boomy chambered muffs are.

Magnaflow is really the way to go, and might as well do all stainless if you do that, never have to redo it again.

I never liked the Dynomax or other turbo muffs. Too quiet, don't sound mean at all, flow like crap and rob power.

Glasspacks can sound nice but kill your flow with the louvers. Use perforated core like Magnaflow instead.

i will check tonite to see which ones i have and i do run a cross connection

Want to eliminate drone? See here and here. Build your drone-killer in accord with the instructions, and run whatever muffler you want.

Thanks. I read this a couple of weeks ago. Problem is there isn't much room under an A body for additional piping and I don't know how much it will cost to have a muffler shop install them.

So I installed the Magnaflow muffers and it stills drones. Actually louder and really bad. I don't know if there is enough room to add resonance pipes. There isn't a lot of room under a Dart. I checked and it looks like you could add resonance pipes on the sides of the front pipes just before the muffler.

I don't have a H or X pipe. Do these have any effect on drone. Seems like it would change the resonance if you added an X or H pipe. Guess the H would be easier to add than an X.

I'm currently leaning towards Dynamax super turbo's to replace the new Magnaflows to quiet things down. Seems like mufflers can unfortuantly be trial and error sometimes.

I read back through the thread. You don't mention what your running after the mufflers. Your not running dumps are you?

Tail pipes all the way to the bumper. 2.25" all the way from front to back.

I was at a car show today and there was a '63 vet there with Magnaflows. His vet didn't sound anything like my dart. Apparantly big blocks, the dart, need more sound control that small blocks. His was pretty quite at idle compared to mine.

There was also a guy there with a '67 cuda with a 318 with 320hp. Talking to him it sounded like he might of had Dynamax VT on it. I didn't get to hear it run. There seem to be a number of variables that effect how the mufflers sound. It's hard to know how they will sound unless you hear them on the same setup so finding the ones you like can become expensive. I'm hoping my next choice is the last.

The Dynamax VT is an interesting design but moving parts in a muffler makes me wonder. I was reading a thread here http://www.performancetrucks.net/fo...-performance-21/dynomax-vt-bad-review-500677/ about Dynamax VT mufflers. One guy said:

"I have one of the guaranteed new style mufflers from Dynomax themselves...yes, the "shrank shrank clank" noise at startup is present in their latest and greatest design. The model number is 17957 for those interested.

If the fact that there is an audible metal noise at the exhaust tip is a turn off for you, don't buy this muffler.

If you don't care about what you can't hear in the cab, then this is the muffler for you. I went from a Flowmaster to a Goerlich Xcelerator to a Corsa, then finally the Dynomax VT and the interior drone went from eyeball rattling to none.

Sorry I didn't read anywhere you had a big block. I assumed it was a 340 car. Guessing you got the 383 instead. I could see that making a difference. I guess I don't really have an answer for that. Pypes mufflers are another option also. They have straight through design as well, but they are surprisingly quiet. Not saying they are better than the Magnaflows you have now but maybe something to check out. I have a set of their race pros on my turbo mustang and it is much quieter than my dart. Now the turbo also muffles the sound. But you can't even really hear my car pull away as I drive off.

Here's a link to their site with a few Mopar sound bites with all their mufflers. The Race Pros that I have their quietiest muffler.

So from all the reading I've done on drone lately they talk about it coming from the tail pipes. That the tail pipes are like organ pipes and they have a resonant sound frequency. There is also the interaction of the two frequencies from the duals that are close in frequency causing a beat frequency. Geez more than I ever thought I wanted to know about drone.

yes it's a 383.

Great choice. I really like the Dynomax Super Turbos.

A body would use the shrotcase dynomax hemi turbo , I have 2.5's with mandrel pipes and factory big block A body exhaust manifolds and it has an awful drone .

i would be looking at adding an X pipe , you'll more than likely still have a drone wit hthe dynomax muffler .

I'm dealing wit hthe same thing on my Dart , X pipe is the next try. I have a Dr. Gas I bought a long time ago so it's going to end up in my dart .

Buck.
A year and a half ago I had to replace the factory exhuast system from the HP manifold flanges to the tail pipes on my 383 Polara. I did not want the irritating loud drone that you can get with the turbo mufflers. The muffler guy (a 73 year old ex-drag racer) had some hemi mufflers installed on the car along with chrome tips that were slightly turned down. He did not recommend an H-pipe. The car has a nice mellow sound at idle or at constant speed and it has a nice roar to it under acceleration. No drone. Oh, I drive the car with the top down so that probably adds to the difference to my ear.

I don't know who made the mufflers but I can try and find out for you if you are interested.

i had the large case 3" super turbos and a x-pipe on my dart.. no drone at all..

seems when comparing friends cars. the ones that have exhaust manifolds have terrible drone with dynomax mufflers. the ones with headers don't seem to drone. don't know what the deal is with that.

I bet the large case mufflers are helping. I already ordered the turbos. Went with the dynomax instead of the cherry bomb ones. I thought the construction of the dynomax looked like it would control the sound better but I could be wrong. The cherry bomb ones are more restrictive and no matting in them. They were also just over half the cost of the dynomax ones. I'm getting too much invested in mufflers. Probably should have just put stock ones back on but they use the smaller tail pipes. At least the original tail pipes were smaller.

I added a 8" long cherrybomb in front of the dual 3" flow 40's and it greatly reduced the raspyness of the sound. My exhaust is pointed down and out at the rear end. Sounds like 4 harleys coming in as I downshift going into a bar parking lot. Pisses off the bikers cause they all have to look upo to see whi is riding in and it is just an old Mopar. LOL.
thats funny.i have said forever my hot rods sound better than harleys

Well I had already ordered the turbos so I'm going to try them. They should at least be overall quieter than the magnaflows. Dynomax listed them as the quietest of their line. The sound clip of the Cherry bomb turbos sounded louder than the dynomax turbos. I think these are the last attempt at something easy to install, muffler change, that still has good flow. If I still don't like these it's stock mufflers or something more complicated like pipe resonators. I keep seeing posts from others about the drone problem. Guess I have a lot of company.

Have to see if I can sell the Magnaflow stainless steel muffs since I won't use them again.

It may be good information for me and others.

Years ago when I had the exhuast system from Accurate Exhaust installed it had their performance three chamber mufflers. They sounded good but had a pretty good drone. When I was buying the system and talked to them about the mufflers they called their performance mullflers hemi mufflers at the time.

Graph shows drone is the same with turbo muff. But if I put resonators on at the 134hz frequency of the drone it would be good. Other two peaks are now lower if you look at previous graph. Don't know if I'll do much more on this since winter storgae isn't far off.

I have TTI headers on my 318. with the TTI 2.5" x-pipe exhaust, and flowmaster super 44's... but it dumps in front of the rear axle.

This guy installed resonator tubes on his Shelby Mustang with electric cutouts on the resonator tubes. You can hear the difference with and without them. He also says with them he can hear the stereo and talk in a normal tone of voice in the car.
