not the kind where i prance in front of a camera like a bimbo LMAO

1/24 and 1/25 plastic model kits LOL

i just started this last week with models for basically the first time and i cant believe how much fun it is....

the kits they make are so accurate ....its amazing

and some ppl have a real talent to make the models look so real.

last night i painted the yellow GTX here but had a mishap when i heated up the paint too much and warped the body. (i was treating it like metal....cant do that LOL)

im getting a replacement body shell from another member and in the mean time i painted the green 70 Sport Satellite today...it was a road runner kit but i would rather have a sport satellite :D

you guys never told me how much fun building models is......
im in on the next model comp.

i am really having a blast with this stuff :wav:

Not all is lost on that yellow Plymouth. Just weather it and make it look like it's been wrecked. Nice job on laying down the clear on that green one!! Keep us updated with more pics.:thumrigh:

There are no mistakes in model building...just make a junker model. I build only junkers for the last 15 years, I am working on a FABO junkyard now.

I was so expecting something different...

Nice paint on both of them, looking forward to see the finished ones.

I am SO disappointed, LOL, but I see you are building my all time favorite car. Owned it from around 71--77 440 sixpack, Dana 3.54, 4 speed, and Air Grabber. Mine was a RR, tho, not a GTX

its bcoz thats my favorite car of all time too ...i have a real F8 green sport satellite (RP23N0G) ....i originally fell in love with mopars bcoz i saw a pic of a RR like yours in a magazine and i was only 16 when i saw that ...i was so in love with that 70 RR in J5 green that i cut the pic out of the magazine and carried it with me in my little make-up case ...at that point i never thought i would ever have a chance to have a real one :D

Ok, here is my kit, built it about 18 years ago or so? Kit bashed from many others, check out the spun aluminum wheel discs and Accell super coil, I even broke open light bulbs to get the fillement out and used them for carb return springs, not sure why I used blue fuel lines, maybe it was to make them stand out? LOL I never put much detail into the interiors. I wish the finish had turned out a litttle more shiney on the body but oh well, still looks ok. I entered this into a few contests and never won with it, then it was dropped and came apart. Maybe the looks didn't appeal to many, its not my favorite kit either but I liked to be different. So starting now, I am going to reassemble this (Rani insisted LOL) :prayer:

Wow, I forgot how addicting this is.......may have to start a new one when I am done with the Daytona LOL

I'm in! looking to buy another car model, maybe for Christmas for myself or the older kid. I wanna use real world rust colored paint and lots of flats on the suspension. Make that warped body car a demo derby car! Hood headers, big *** bumpers, striped tires! Question, how do you shoot clear over paint so it doesnt melt the paint? Everytime I try and clearcoat something, it just ruins the paint under it? Not dry enough?

One of the things that concerns me is that the solvents that are used in current day automotive paints might craze the plastic. Back in the day, we tried lacquer with bad results. The car looked like it had been in an I-5 pileup. The other thing we found out is that putting prototype paint on a 1/25 scale model put paint on that was 25 times too thick. The nice thing about automotive paint is the ability to color match is 25 times better. The majors have the Mopar palettes figured out well.

We found best painting results using an air brush. Badger, Binks, and Paasche were the guns of choice. I wouldn't be surprised if they had these things with gravity feed. (If we'd had game, we'd have figured out you can run make up through these things and the possibilities of working with the ladies .... )

I recall that we hooked an airbrush up to a spare tire as an air supply. Worked well. We found that using the spare as a storage tank with the air compressor gave us a very stable air supply.

The model railroad bunch has got weathering down pat. Model Railroader runs good, well illustrated, how-to articles on the subject. A good hobby store will carry the magazine. As for paints, Pactra, Testors, Floquil, and Tamiya are good brands (IIRC). My A4 66 Dart used seven different pigments in the PPG paint we sprayed on it. I wouldn't have the foggiest notion how to blend a good A4 in Testors, were I to build a replica of the car.

A little progress :glasses7:

that depends on what kind of clear and what kind of paint underneath....sound like you might be mixing Lacquer with Enamel which is not going to work, most of the time. thats why when painting an old chevy that had laquer, it required a complete skinning before you can put on new non-lacquer finish with a good stable surface.

the old lacquers actually have more solvents than the new urethanes.
the old lacquers had enough solvents to remain wet under the clear ....the clear kinda skinned over to trap the solvents in and appear wet.....thats why cars from the 50s had old paint that was cracked and chalky....the skinned over clear eventually got old and cracked ...letting the solvents escape leaving it dried out and chalky.

the new urethanes work on chemical reaction so no solvents remain....the hardner, hardens the surface by chemical reaction making it a thermoset. thats why once its set, lacquer thinner wont penatrate and lift a urethane finish.

bcoz of the chemical reaction i had a thought that the reaction can warp the plastic model ...and turns out it is thick enough to handle it...i did seal the surface with epoxy sealer before spraying the base and finish coats....the epoxy sealer will act as a barrier itself. the epoxy is catalized so it also works on chemical reation but not as intense as the top coats. Given proper dry or flash times it was made for a very stable surface the whole way through spraying it.

and the mil thickness was never really an issue, the base pretty much covered in two dust coats and the clear took an initial dust coat and only one wet coat......after it shrunk back it didnt drown out any detail......another coat prolly would have. :p

this has given new life to the multitude of nail polish jars i have that i will never wear again. LOL

Keith, that's sweet! Rani, noticed the infamous H/F"purple" gun.Is that what you shot the F8 with ?

XS 2 Big time ...i have a Sharpe Blue Cobalt and a Sata .....and the cheapy H/F does the job just as good ...only downside is you cant change needle/nozzle sizes but for general purpose work like painting a model ....who cares LOL ....i get it to atomize a little better by turning the fluid down and air pressure up a bit :coffee2:

Thanks,Rani. Had the Cobalt 1.4 tip'didn't ,my style of painting. The Sata, and H/F, fit my style better.

Welcome to the world of styrene addiction!

Check out Model car magazine forum lots of cool stuff going on over there, myself a couple other FABO members are members there also.

Soooo, Rani has yet another project???...I have a 1/18 71 Charger that has a little "meltage",(new word),in the same spot....

My wintertime/ I have a cold project...I work on this when Its cold and wet outside...or when I'm curled up on the couch cause I'm sick....The paint is left over from some Wheels I did from a CJ7 restoration,..supposed to be a factory Jeep colour...

Nice detail on the bird there 66340...
