Why the /6

-
I don't know. I thought that 160 responses was pretty good (it actually says 192 responses when I looked). This thread has also had 4930 views. I would think that a lot of formerly disinterested in slant folks (like myself) have reached a new level of respect for the 6 banger after reading some of the posts. I'd even go so far as to guess that a few guys will be building slants now that wouldn't have before reading this thread.

Thank you, 1967 'cuda.

I think the reason people like the slant, is why they like Mopar. There's a billion fords and chevys out there. Likewise, there's a million v8s. Dare to be different in a mopar? How about a mopar slant six?

If I wanted just power, I'd go to a v8. If I wanted easily recognizable, I'd go with Ford or Chevy.

But I pull up some place, and people are like "is that a nova? what is it?" They don't know it's a valiant. Then I pop the hood, and they see the strangest looking little engine, and a clean and easily accessible engine bay. Love it.

So true! Within half-mile from my house there are probably a dozen or more early Mustangs or Camaros. But try and find an early MOPAR... let alone one with a /6... good luck!

4390 views vs..quickie look, 204,982 views on second gen barracudas ( a lot of v8s) ...or 132,493 views on show your big block....30,180 on hemi swaps.. :)

The Slant is a cult, and either you get it or you don't. I grew up street racing 440's and Hemi's, spent a dozen plus years with Nitro cars..but in my mind there is NOTHING cooler in the Mopar realm than a hot Slant set on kill.

I wouldn't mind having a /6 as a daily and take the 440 out on the weekends. Especially if I can make it sound like the one in that video! That's pretty cool!

since you mentioned the straight 6, my girlfriend has one in like a 2001 jeep ckerokee 2WD. . she has no idea what mileage it gets or can't figure it!?? is that a good motor? or what?...
Great motor. Not a Jeep expert, but I heard that the Jeep 4.0 L straight six is basically unchanged from the 1950's. People love it. It is a great example of how adding modern controls (MPFI) to an engine does wonders. Too bad the slant six never similarly transitioned to the modern era, though a few guys here are working on that. I understand the small block Chevy isn't much changed from the 1955 version other than improved controls.

The 3.8L V-6 in my 2002 Chrysler minivan looks similar in many ways to my 1965 273 small block, less 2 cylinders. It still has pushrods and a rugged timing chain. Indeed, the stamped rocker arms look like the ones in later V-8 small blocks. But with modern controls and 4 sp transmission, it gets as good mileage as my 2.4L minivan. The Magnum V-6 was actually the old V-8 small block less 2 cylinders. Didn't work well (bad vibrations), so only lasted a few years. The 3.8L has a better V angle for a six. I read that a straight six is almost ideal for smoothness. That is one reason BMW people love it.

I love the /6 auto in my 69 Barracuda.. Stone stock, smooth as a sewing machine. Decent fuel mileage. Takes off quick enuf to keep up with traffic. Simple to work on. Wouldn't change a thing except maybe TBI someday..

Try a turbo on it; you may love outruning those 340s... LOL!

This is just a FYI and forgive me if I'm just repeating something you already know, but the vaunted "small-block Chevy" underwent a total redesign a few years back and what emerged was still a a small-block in size (it had the same bore-center spacing, 4 4",) but NO interchangeable parts with the original small-block motor. NONE. It was a BIG improvement is a lot of ways and has amassed a cult-following in just a few short years, to the extent that the hot rod-based magazines have fallen all over themselves featuring article after article about the engine and how to hop it up. It really does make the original small-block engine look weak, by comparison. A supercharged version of it is being sold in the new Corvettes and Cadillac CTS-V models. I think they're something like 558 horsepower...

Sorry for the non-MOPAR content...:eek:ops:

May be something to look into. I've read a lot of yours and others posts about the turbo slants. Sounds awesome. I'm just completely inexperienced with that whole realm. If i decide to jump in the pool, I'll drive straight to Arkansas so your can help me fix all my screw-ups!..

that new chevy motor could possibly have us, the mopar faithful wondering what the heck we're here under Ma Fiat's wings!?? LOL
MR. number cruncher, I get the point..... but you point out,,, like 30,000 views on the hemi???? my question is just HOW many people will ever own any HEMI!??? 426, the old boat anchor, or the new so called hemi????
one selling point for the slant, just like the small block, easily accessable and affordable....
and i'm sure someone could offer any of us slant guys a good deal on a 2nd gen cuda with any v8 ( sb or b,rb (even hemi), motor, No chevy transplants thank you! LOL),and most of would gladly take it!!! LOL

That's a good plan, right down to the point where you bring it to me.... big-time glitch, there...

We have spent a good 4 and-a-half YEARS putting together this bucket of bolts and have YET to make it to the drag strip with the completed car!

That may change within a week or two, but, until there is some proof of the pudding, anything I say is just so much hot air. Unfortunately, that's the one thing I am pretty good at...

Talk's cheap... we'll see.:banghead:

Good luck at strip when you get there. I look forward to hearing how it goes. Should be very rewarding after four and half years..

Well i know i posted in here somewhere but i have forgot and to lazy to look up 9 pages lol...

Glad to see some people realize what we do, and why we do it. So im not going to post on that, BUT something that my boss put into scale for me that i thought i would post.

Its a given that building a slant isn't cheap, most SB guys says their junk is cheaper. Depending on how you look at it, it may or may not be.

Lets look at it this way, stock A body's ran what:

14.0-13.0's stock on street tires?
13.0-11.75 with just playing with the top end and drivetrain?
Full motor builds NA maybe into the 10.0's when they are trying?

So for alot of work and cash they are loosing 4 seconds (correct times that are wrong)

Now lets try a slant:
stock they seem to run from 22.0-20.0
Tuned i got my 68 dart to a 18.3
head work and cam/intake/exhaust 15's-17's
Full HOT street motor builds you can get into the 14's and even the 13's
A race build i think 12's are possible and even 11's in a 3000 lbs car.

THATS 10 SECONDS ON THE SAME BUDGET. So for your money, the slant gain more. Will it be the fastest, nope, but no matter what you build there is always someone faster...

805,

I realize that I am just poking..and have learned lots from this thread..and have a bit more respect for the /6...

But I am confused...

The only argument I am hearing other than to be different is for 1/4 mile speed....or like a v8 would do the 1/4 mile....perhaps you put more bucks into it and you are faster than a v8 on the strip....ok...

In real world terms...how does this really help you ?

As far as I know, our speed limits are the same..and very few of us will experience the need to blast down a 1/4 mile flat open..in fact, in Canada if you are caught racing, it will be very expensive...I have been driving for almost 40 years and I never have had the need to do it in any car that I have owned....

Am I missing something ?

boy you are poking arn't you! i recall you had some backhalfed duster? For me its to be different, with my 68 and worked slant i pull people right past the HEMI charger and AMC rambler in race trim, stripes and all. That they are easy to work on, space is all over the place, they last forever (unless you throw #5 rod) they are fine on power stock for a DD and can get over 22mpg. So on the street by your context you need nothing more correct?

Now for 99% of us (/6, SB, BB) we all want a little more, or maybe alot more, even to the point thats its never enough. So with a slant starting at 22 seconds you learn the car and how to work the track, you have more room to grow for cheaper, and the guys that race are by far the best people i know. I have the slant bug and have had it going on 6 years, this coming from a guy who builds HEMI darts all day lol. Yea you cant beat a race hemi, but realistically its not in my budget for THIS car. Now my AFX will be getting a 600+" AL Hemi with EFI injection. Anyways does this all answer your question?

here is a response in a question:

Why mess with a Holley when EFI is sooooo much better?

Why pay for a 426 Hemi when a 6.2 hemi is cheaper and can make more reliable HP?

Why shift when an auto provides more torque, is more consistant, and is way more street friendly?

Because we like them 6's...and a turbocharged 6 gets more looks at a car show than an old hemi ;-)

Its run to to pull a turbo cobalt or G37 or straight out run a camaro or scream chicken. Most people think my car is a 383 but i tell them its a slant and they get this real sick look on their face, then their friends start in with you got beat.... LOL

Backhalfed Duster ? If you mean a numbers matching survivor /6, then yup...or did. :)

I can see that if you are interested in net speed, then yes. I too am an underdog type of guy..that is one reason we run a MOPAR...however, I am too old and my kids are too young for the speed thing..... I am not putting in a sure grip partially for that reason.

Our roads are becoming so bad that I am thinking that I will not put my other toy on the road this year.

I am curious to see how Bill does when he gets his ride on the road.

hmm... thought it was you...

anyways think of it this way, would you want to get another probably 4mpg and usable power on the cheap out of it?

I spent a lot of time on the /6 trying to get it to have good gas mileage. it did quite poorly in the MPG department...finally figured out the difference what I was getting and everyone else was that since mine is a '75...i had first gen pollution controls on it...

We are paying @ 7 bucks US per can gallon here...which was, oddly enough, one reason we moved to the V8...

i'll make a few points here not rising to the surface.
I don't intend to get in a political argument, write a paper on the state of the U.S. and world economy, interest rates, inflation, condition of the stock market, financial well-being of state governments, pric e of bacon, beef, and peanut butter..... the
teasurey, etc......
But consider: droves of the population move from the cities and suburbs to small town America and even the rural countryside....seeking a simplier and more affordable lifestyle... getting back to basics, trying to find an afforable lifestyle, etc.....

I am now in the senior citizen, fixed income category.....i'm like a friend of mine, my age and financial status, .... he has a restored 65 273 dart, but has a slant driver,...and like he says, as time goes on, he CAN work on the slant, he has garage full o f parts,... yes a new say, Dart would get better mileage, but he will never be able to work on it or take it to the dealership for repairs ?or to local mechanic to work on it....
one of the guys hear reports HOW many people read this as compared to reading bout the sb bb and hemi. point I would make is how many people are on the FABO site whether it be interest in sb slant or what?????. compared to FBBO, e body site???? fact is the A body is the most afforable of the old mopars.... and the slant car the most affordable of the slants. period, initial cost of project car, driver, restored car, parts, what have ya?????
now its a fact, I love to put my foot in a mopar with a big honkin motor, feel that sucker pin my back against the seat, see that speedometer rising above that 110 mark, wondering when the front end might get a little too light, or blow a tire, poke a rod thru the side of the block., feel that adrenalin, have flashback to wrecks in my earlier days, get a little sweaty somewhere....... but then again I love my old slant,TOoooooo.....

I think you all are nuts and need to go out and buy a Toyota Prius.............:supz:  :wav: ! !:eek:ops:

Just a little fun !!
