Why the /6

reminds me of a Mel Gibson movie where he told the guy he " was just a little crazy", right before he went nuts and kicked the guys a--!? LOL
 
i'll make a few points here not rising to the surface.
I don't intend to get in a political argument, write a paper on the state of the U.S. and world economy, interest rates, inflation, condition of the stock market, financial well-being of state governments,pric e of bacon, beef, and peanut butter..... the
teasurey, etc......
But consider: droves of the population move from the cities and suburbs to small town America and even the rural countryside....seeking a simplier and more affordable lifestyle... getting back to basics,trying to find an afforable lifestyle, etc.....

I am now in the senior citizen, fixed income category.....i'm like a friend of mine, my age and financial status, .... he has a restored 65 273 dart, but has a slant driver,...and like he says, as time goes on, he CAN work on the slant, he has garage full o f parts,... yes a new say, Dart would get better mileage, but he will never be able to work on it or take it to the dealership for repairs ?or to local mechanic to work on it....
one of the guys hear reports HOW many people read this as compared to reading bout the sb bb and hemi. point I would make is how many people are on the FABO site whether it be interest in sb slant or what?????. compared to FBBO, e body site???? fact is the A body is the most afforable of the old mopars.... and the slant car the most affordable of the slants. period, initial cost of project car, driver, restored car, parts, what have ya?????
now its a fact, I love to put my foot in a mopar with a big honkin motor, feel that sucker pin my back against the seat, see that speedometer rising above that 110 mark, wondering when the front end might get a little too light, or blow a tire, poke a rod thru the side of the block., feel that adrenalin, have flashback to wrecks in my earlier days, get a little sweaty somewhere....... but then again I love my old slant,TOoooooo.....

I too, am on a fixed income, am 75 and retired... but I'm not DEAD, (yet) and want to have some more fun before I take my last ride, soo....

I think you can have your cake and eat it, too in this instance...

Keep the slant six (just make sure it's in an A Body,) and add a hairdryer...

Three hundred horsepower is readily-available with a stock short block, and that will outrun a lot of V8s...

I admit to being old school, I don't have any experience with, FI, turbos ( O k, my cummins got one), .... I believe as we old style guys gain some knowledge and see the results we will be more atuned to trying it.
me personally, like engines, and under the hood, to have at least a factory look. I don't even like a flex upper rad hose, or lectric fans! LOL
if there is a demand , there will be a "cottage industry" pop us supplying the necessary parts. hopefully M A will work on the "how to" artcles and NOT M M. LOL .... just me......
part of the GOOD thing about A bodies, affordable enough to have several to play with, with ya good a place for um. seems hard for us mopar guys not to have at least a small herd! LOL

I wish I could afford a new Toyota Camry V-6... Those things will run 14.20s at 100mph in the quarter... pretty much toe-to-toe with a stock 340 in an A-Body, and that ain't too shabby... and get you 30+mpg on the highway.
 
When he word gets out about the true potential of the turbo slant six motors, I think it will result in a LOT of them being built... but, the word has to get out first...:violent1:

Anyone want a 6 banger and is willing to save it from the scrap yard can have it for free if you come get it. Otherwise, it's going where it belongs.....to get melted down to make a V8.

Put a 4sp or more ratios auto tranny behind that 340, and some 3.9 or 4.11 gears in the diff, and some fuel injection and you'd find the 340 will hold it's own.

That Tojo goes good for whats put in it....VVT/VVTL, 4 valves a pot, nice valve angle, cam specs, injection, manifold design, all alloy construction, etc, etc.

im buildng a low buck slant six with CR headers, a home-made intake, set up to mount two turbos from the mid 80's Dodge Daytona turbo Z. Also a 125 hp Nitrous "Power shot" system. Got an 8 3/4 rear end with 3.55 gears and positract. I cant wait to start munching on some of them newer muscle cars.....you really can make them go, and it really isn't all that expensive. Ive got a barn full of mopars, with everything from a flathead six in my 41 Plymouth, to a poly motor, a 318 340, 360, 440, 413 max wedge, and a 632 B1. This sleeping sis is gonna be fun!

That sounds like a VERY interesting car! Please send us some photos of the header and intake system, and fill us in on the mechanical details!

and i'm sure someone could offer any of us slant guys a good deal on a 2nd gen cuda with any v8 ( sb or b,rb (even hemi), motor, No chevy transplants thank you! LOL),and most of would gladly take it!!! LOL

next month i'm finally bringing home my '70 with a /6 and couldn't be happier to keep it a /6. besides #s matching being a reason to keep it a /6 (not many of the 2nd gen /6 e-bodies left, most were upgraded by guys who wanted a v8 ... so my hats off to them for helping make mine much more rare :) ), I can 'build' it for much cheaper than upgrading to a v8 (k-member, tranny, rear end, driveshaft, front electrical, and a couple other things I'm forgetting .... e-body parts are not cheap when you find em), it will be extremely unique at shows and gatherings, because it is a 'bare bones' no option Barracuda I can drive it daily with less headaches and worries that something might happen to a 'rare' car and get better gas mileage in the meantime.

That will be a super-neat E-Body project~~~

What would be REALLY neat, I think, would be to turbocharge that slant six with about ten pounds of boost which would put it right in the 14's on pump gas! It should run toe-to-toe with a 340 Challenger, maybe even outrun it if the 340 is stock.


Here are some of pictures of a couple of turbo'd slant sixes which should give you some idea of the packaging. Looks like there is LOTS of room in that cavernous E-Body engine room.

@ Bill - I've been reading your posts + pishtas + tons of others here and on slantsix.org and eventually that is the plan (a few years down the road tho), but i'm on a super tight budget to just get her on the road 1st. and doing the turbo project (I would actually LOVE to do a 'what if the factory did turbocharge a /6' project and do it up to look as factory as possible) will require me to upgrade the crappy 7.25 rearend to an 8.75, and I might as well upgrade to an A833 at the same time (stuck with the crappy a903 now, yuck!) ..... so even doing a budget turbo build would cost me several grand in upgrades. so for now, she'll get a rebuild to @ 9.3:1 with an offy 4bbl intake and probably a holley 390cfm w/electronic ignition, relocate the battery to the truck to clean it all up. nothing too special, but it should move along decently, get decent gas mileage and best of all it's my dream car that I'll be able to drive daily. :)

since I was asked about the story on her: my dad bought it in '72 and drove it all around WA until '87ish when he parked it, no reason just wasn't interested in driving it anymore. sat on the farm in this spot ever since, outside in eastern WA through every season. the saving grace was that she is parked in area where the summer sun doesn't beat her to crap due to the trees .... but one of those trees dropped a branch on the hood/fender/windshield 2yrs ago - all replaceable, but a sad and costly event. I've been trying to pry it out of his hands for years, and finally got him to believe I want the car to restore and keep, not flip (ever have something you think about EVERY single day ... this is me and this Barracuda for the last 10years .... every fricken day ... time to get it out of my head and into my garage!!!) i'll be driving to WA end of next month to pick her up and trailer her back to CO for the revival. my son graduates next year and we are giving him our protégé, so I need something to fill the spot as my daily driver :)
