I recently built a 400- 470 stroker and still after about an hour running time it still has 80 oil pressure . After it gets really warmed up it drops to 60 while idleing. It has a milodon oil pump with the adjustable pressure screw. I have it backed out almost all the way. It has a 7qrt. oil pan fully ported 440 source heads 586 lift comp. cam and a 950 dp holley. I am afraid once I start driving this thing and get on it some the oil will push past the critical parts and destroy my motor. What say ye

Probably not a problem but the pumping forces
are robbing you of some power and make sure
everythings being oiled properly.
I'd keep an eye on the oil filter.

The gauge might be off as well, you could get a different gauge and check it..if your really worried, what do you have for an Oil Filter?? hope its not a Fram..

Just for comparison sake, my 40 year old original 85K 318 has 60 PSI on start up.

Once warm it drops to 40-45.

I bet after it gets broke in some it will drop a tad.

Check your pump drive on next maintenance check. make sure you are not rounding your hex with that pressure. Can you check your bypass and make sure the valve is not stuck?

What grade of oil are you using??
Maybe you could use a thinner grade oil

X3 on the oil filter concerns...no fram...the end caps pop and go full bypass...yes I have had it happen to me. Go Wix at least.

Yup. The 340 in the old FJ-40 Landcruiser used to start up cold and bury the 100 PSI SW gauge. It used to routinely run at 80 much above an idle. Never caused a problem. I've always run either Hastings or Wix filters. NEVER run Fram filters!!!!

x2.
I'll add you should have the HP oil pump drive with it. If it was me I'd want it lower.

Other than the oil filter issues,, the only other consequence of excess oil press,, that I can remember reading,, was it throws a huge amount of oil off the rods, onto the cyl walls, and the oil ring can have a prob scraping the cyl walls ..

hope it helps
