Hi everyone, I'm in the process of taking apart the cooling system in my 440 to inspect it and I've ran into a little problem. I'm working on the water pump housing now and it looks like the motor mounts are I'm between the water pump housing and the block. So in order to take the water pump housing off I have to unbolt the motor mount and I'm terrified that the motor will come crashing down. Am I being too worried or is there another way to do it?

Ok yeah I'm glad I saw that. Otherwise I would be one unhappy camper right about now

Jack up the motor and put a 2x4 between the pan and centerlink. That won't cause any problems.

What's a safe spot to jack the motor up? Don't want to poke any holes anywhere

Like mentioned above, use a 8" or so piece of 2x4 or 2x6, place it on top of a floor jack and place it on the oil pan to support the engine.

Ok I'll do that. I was under the impression that the oil Pan wasn't a good place to jack it up? Or is that just if there is nothing between the jack and the pan

You could always use an engine hoist to lift it up some.

That's what I would do if I had one but I'm in my little two bay garage so I don't have all the necessary equipment.

well, dont tell him to jack it up... he needs to put the board under it and light pressure... enough to hold in place... not trying to jack it up at all.. just keep the engine static position.

as long as you get the flat board level and put equal pressure it will be fine..

wait a minute.....why take of the housing? the water pump comes off without taking it off... leave it on... mine is the same way... really no reason to take the housing off....

maybe he is redoing the housing as well... a light weight aluminum housing?

i recently switched out my thermostat and the two bolts that bolted into the housing striped on my... "TERRIBLE" fix one thing ... just to find something else to fix....

anyways the car was fine and it is fine now & FIXED... car and thermostat was fine i was switching to a 180 from a 190 ... point of the story is ... if it aint broke dont fix it. . .

haha

Well I just want to see what kind of shape its in. I read a post about the 440 source water pump housings having a very poorly design that restricts flow. I have been having a lot of the same symptoms mentioned so I decided to take a look. It looks ok to me but it and the fins on the water pump are pretty corroded so I don't know if that would make a difference or not. The pump still turns nicely

is the housing the flow problem or the vane type on the waterpump itself... maybe someone can clarify...

I have a motorplate also, wanted to switch out to the alum housing also... and figured.. why, the car runs cool best to leave alone... i will wait till something goes wrong with my iron housing... then change... BTW i beleive they have different vane/fin designs for better cooling...as these older guys... im 47 so i dont know much....

thats when i would change mine out... in a uh oh moment...

So this is what I've got. Can someone tell me if this water pump is bad? It still turns fine IMO it's still good but I could be wrong

While corroded as long as the bearing are fin and the fins arent bent its not "broke". Now since you already have it off you could just buy a new one and keep that as a spare. I've heard good things about FlowKooler pumps and they aren't that much more than a stock replacement. Just a thought.

So if the pump is still good that means its either the radiator or head gasket and the radiator looks fine. So that must mean head gasket...:banghead:

You mentioned that you have a 440Source housing and that they are known to be restrictive. I've never owned a 440Source housing but if that is a known problem it might be worth it to take it off and give it some loving with a grinder to open up/smooth out the flow paths.

I wasn't sure if I had one or not but was having te same issues that other people have had with those housings so I wanted to take a look to see. Are the numbers on the side of the housing what identifies the housing? They are hard to read. Also it didn't seem too restricted it seems pretty wide but I haven't got it out to where I can really look at it.

What the car doing? overheting? if so what conditions is it overheating.... Vermont is mild weather...
