Mopar Cam 284/484 or 288/497

Ok just undecided on which cam to use. Both are 108 lobe separation. I will replace the 280/474 cam. I have a recurved FBO distributor going to put 3.91 gears. Already have a 3400-3600 stall 9.5 FTI converter in my Dart Sport 360. One cam is the known 284/484, the is the lesser known oval track cam 288/497 cam. Please give me insight on this combo!
 
I'm ok with an MP cam. By why not a solid lifter? You can restrict oil to the lifters, make more power...all good things?

I like the P4529969, or if you have the P/V clearance, the P4529970.

I would lash them at .020/.022 hot and go for it.



Other than that, a custom grind.
 
Ok thanks. But I have both the grinds mentioned. The 284 is slightly used. The 288 grind is brand new. Bought the 288 off ebay. The 284 had it from my pops, it is slightly used @ only 500 miles. Will get new lifters for either one.
 
Not familiar with the oval cam but ran the 284/484 25+ years ago and loved it. Great semi-mild street cam. I just don't know if you will see a heap of difference vs the cam you have now. Still love it though.

Fair enough.

Which 288 do you have? One has 72 degrees of overlap and the other has 76.

My book shows them both on a 108. But the duration and lift are exactly the same.

What you have will work. I'm just not a fan of hydraulic cams. If you already have it, use it.

I had the 108 center cam in a 73 340 with the stock high compression pistons, 587 heads with 1.88 intake valves untouched, strip dominator and small 650 DP holley, 904 trans and 3800 stall converter. Was in a 78 Aspen with a too low 486 gear and 29 inch tires. One and only time at the track it ran 13.40 without any tuning. It pulled better on the street with the 3.55 gears and smaller tires, but when the rear broke I threw the 4.86's in so we could run it at the track. We put that car together with mostly left over parts. Nice sounding cam. Here is a sound clip.
 
Appreciate your experience gtsdude! i feel more confident in using this cam. I plan to mostly do street duty with limited if not any hiway drives! So the strip dominator is neat on the street?
 
With your gears and converter I wouldn't be afraid to use one if I had it.
 
I think both those cams are mistakes. But given you have them - I'd run the 284/484 and advance it by 6-8 degrees.
 
Mistakes? Advanced 6 or 8 degrees. Seems like alot. I do have the x-heads and kb107 pistons. Would'nt compression be around 9.4 or 9.5? Also my gearing will help in low end grunt. Just asking thanks all for your answers! Very informative!

I seen Moper,and Cracked Back recommend this,more than a few times... Advancing the intake cam timing ,gives you more low end torque... It's an common trick,for making overcammed engines, not a turd on the below 2500-3000 range torque.
 
I already use premium. If I install straight up will I lose too much low end even with my current set up?
 
You can install it 6-8 degrees ahead, but you must verify P/V clearance whatever you do.

A 3.9X gear is pretty low (high numerically) by today's standards. That cam installs at 106 by Chrysler, so to be 6 advanced you'll be at 100. I can't imagine you needing the intake hitting max lift much quicker than that.
 
It's a trick sometimes required when using the wrong cam. At least in my opinion. I don't think cylinder pressure will be a concern with those camshafts... Nor will valve to piston clearance. The last MP cam I installed needed 8 degrees advance just to get it to the recommended ICL. It was made horribly. So degreeing it is a "must" anyway. Just have keyways handy for the cam and crank in case you have to move it a mile.

There is a slight, mistake, on the cam descriptions. 1 is a flat track and the other is an oval banked cam. One of them is a 108 to be installed at 106.
*I beileve* I had the flat track @ 108 installed @ 106 as per MP Instructions.

Also, not to be a jerk but your idle seemed high.

I would recommend a RPM intake to help boost low RPM torque without very much high RPM loss, if at all. If your going to run the TQ, the single plane will do.
 
When I bought my Street/strip '71 Cuda 340 (10.1CR), it was all stock except for the old B&M super Holeshot 3500 verter, .484 purple installed straight up, dual plane and a 750 Holley, and 3.55's. Ran great on the street and turned 13.3's all day long lifting left tyre every pass with 8x26" slicks, had plenty of torque, I did try the .509 hyd. cam in it but didn't run any quicker. Added a Holley SD intake+2" spacer, 850DP, bigger hdrs, DC. 590" sft cam, 4.30's, 4200 TA verter, 10x28's, went 12.3's, still had good street manners on the odd road trip....I would say use the .484 as you have it but a solid is better as YR says, perhaps not as big as the .590 though with your gears/verter though......

Well thanks for all your info. Will be getting cam offset keys from Mazzolini parts. Also already have a true roller cloyes (the better one not street roller). Although engine has roughly 65 to 70000 miles since rebuild may need new chain set. Is rollmaster or JP timing set any better? Theres all kinds of claims to be the best. IWIS german chain?

You would he right, that was just after break in of that cam, didn't even have a tach installed yet.
 
Ahhhhhh, nothing like a freshly fired engine! It did sound real good.
