Ok everyone! I know this has been beat to a pulp. But currently what oil preferably conventional is good enough to run in a 360 with stock clearances? I have been using 30 weight vr-1. But need other sources of oil please!!:)

I use shell rotella t 15w40 with a zinc additive. It is affordable, I switched to it 15 years ago after wiping out a 509 cam with synthetic and no additive. I have had no issues in many different flat tappet hydraulic engines, big and small block with cams up to 580 lift with proper valve springs.

I use Lucas 10/30 Hot Rod oil in my 75 Ford Truck. 2400 PPM of zinc.

The last couple years I have been using Conventional Valvoline and Rislone Zinc additive.

This is what everyone around us uses, great stuff, our local engine builder sells it . Has high zinc for flat tapper cams

You can never have enough zinc. 5000 ppm is a good start.

I use Rotella T 15w40 and Lucas zinc as well in our 67 273. 5 gallon pail of Rotella is $60-70 here.

If no cats, Brad Penn 10W-30, or 5W-30, 0W-30 are all good alternatives.
Really, the priority ought to be the right viscosity for the clearances and the engine termperatures. Then the base stock, and additive packages for the use and spring pressures. If its burning oil, or seeing pressure drop on long highway runs, then try multigrade 40.

10-30 Brad Penn user here and have been for years. I have been also adding a zinc additive from Summit for my .650 solid lifter cam for extra insurance

"add this to any 5 qts of oil you are good to go....."

An engine really will last longest with the right mix of additives for the oil, engine and use. Adding excess ZDDP is not a good idea, and adding to an oil that doesn't use it at all is probably a bad idea. If your going to add ZDDP, add it to an oil that's already has decent amount. At least that way you know its part of the formulation. Try not to exceed 1400 ppm Zn or Phos.

Do what ever you want..I have doing this for upteen years....use in my street car with hydraulic cam and use in all bracket cars with solid lifters and hughes flat tappet cams.....

Just my opinion, too much zinc has it's down sides as well. Spring pressure and engine use plays a part, but in a average street engine 1300 -1500 ppm serves just fine. That's about what the oil had back in the day. The rest of todays oils are better - minus the zinc.

I've used ZDDP issue free. I added it to 10w-30 QS.

Other options to the OP are 15w-50 full synthetic Mobil racing oil. Sold at Walmarts everywhere. I'm trying this in my '77 ramcharger. Just went on a big vacation in it (went through 9 states and over 3700 miles) and it purrs like a kitten.
