We are looking to get a new washer/dryer. I am going to do my homework but thought I would ask the masses here. Specs we are looking at....
no front load washer(horror stories)
Prefer no digital display/boards
Dryer is NG
NO MAYTAG
I'm leaning towards Samsung....
Thoughts, pros/cons
Thanks
Steve

Where can you get service if/when you need it? My mother-in-law bought a LG washer from Lowes and had a heck of a time getting service and warranty. Lowes just sells them and doesn't provide service. The locals that sell/ and service didn't want to do warranty work for a washer they didn't sell. I try to buy from the local appliance store that sells and services their products. Just a thought.

don't know if you like consumer reports, but you can do a 1 month subscription for ~ $10.

there all junk , sorry to be so negative but it's the truth . maybe look at the industrial versions .

maintain your current rig.

New washers are a joke. The gov implemented "water saving" mandates and, to meet them, manufacturers cannot make a washer that actually works. The web is flooded with consumer complaints about dry detergent powder all over their clothes, inadequate rinsing, clothes still soiled, and the "extra" water options are laughable. You're better off with a 25 year old speed queen.

went through this recently, myself. if you need to learn this the hard way, make sure you set yourself up for easy returns.

My personal preference is GE. I built this house with GE appliance package over 30 years ago. Everything has been replaced, but only once. Except the clothes dryer, It's OEM.
I've heard that everything Samsung builds is overpriced junk. So long as I can buy GE I'll never know.
And yes the newer GE washing machine is the water saver type. We use the proper HE grade liquid detergent. We wear clean clothes. I'll admit we had our doubts when we first saw the short disc like agitator. Nastiest ever thrown in was a couple of towels loaded with dog blood, vomit, and ****, back when Niki was hit by a car. Yeah... it cleans laundry.

Thanks guys, I hear and agree with you on new stuff and maintaining the old stuff. This Maytag washer is more unbalanced then I am, so a new one will be bought.
Mike I hear you about service/warranty. We have quite a few choices within 1/2 hour drive for "big box stores" and smaller ones, but would like to spend my $$ with the small guy that needs my $$.
I have learned my lesson with warranties and a big screen TV lol. (For example The Brick!!)

I went to CR to see what posted there, but gotta buy a membership. I may just do that.
Kenmore=Sears, (I think) hopefully it's still good quality. I understand s**t breaks down, but I want someone to stand behind it and not some 3rd party offshore based company.
GE is another quality one I was thinking about. (Samsung and WP also). Samsung we have zero issues with, whether a TV, or laptop, anything really...so far lol.
Thanks all much appreciated.
Oh we will also be looking into the extended warranty also.

Check out CR.org Steve. I have always had good luck with Kenmore stuff, but that may be no more

Get a Speed Queen 12 years warranty. They are the by far the best washer dryer you can buy. No fancy digital display or circuit boards to fail. They make the commercial ones for laundry mats. Look at the reviews. I’m had mine for 25 years. The new newer models are just as well built. You will just have to find a dealer near you. They cost less than those front end loaders. My uncle is an appliance repairman for the last 45 years. He works mainly on LG and Samsung because they are Crap. https://speedqueen.com/

that is some great advice, maybe Speed Queen is still quality...good to hear
My Amana set hasn't broken in 5 years, but I still hate the washer. I can't set the warm water temp manually and some of the safety 'features' make me want to crowbar the lid open at times.
Lately my school of thought has been to buy the cheapest stuff I can because of less 'features' and as soon as a unit breaks out of warranty, replace it. Don't spend a dime or a second trying to repair. Appliances have become disposable commodities.

In '96 one of the "luxurys" that came with the house when we moved in was a GE washer drier set . The washer was fine but the drier (electric) caused some serious overheating issues.
Got rid of that drier and replaced it with a Kenmore gas that had continual "no start" issues with glow element ignition.

10 years ago my son was with GeekSquad at the local BB and bought us this Samsung pair. The price was right for me so I wasn't complaining.
Any way since 2010 I've replaced a drum belt on the drier, a fill valve and a drain pump (just last Monday) on the washer. Part prices were pretty cheap but I still had to learn by do.

Drain pump fail was impeller spinning on the shaft. 30 bucks for the new pump. A bunch of screws, three hoses, and the hardest part, the wire/spring seal retainer behind the door.

Hi steve, my buddy owns an appliance shop and he won't even sell or repair Samsung anything. He says they're extremely difficult to work on therefore expensive and parts are not high quality.
He sold me a top loader washer with a dial and wanted me to be sure we got one with a full size agitator as it helps you load the washer better and distribute weight more evenly around the perimeter of the drum.
Washer is a whirlpool and the drier is a kenmore electric front loader.
Hope this helps. Brian

Bought this Samsung pair in August 2016. No problems whatsoever.

Wife routinely runs dog beds and other large loads like bath mats through them, I've often run my dirty coveralls and piles of dirty shop rags through them (don't tell her) with great results.

Ps. We got rid of a perfectly good HE top loader (came with the house) for these front loaders because the Wife hated it. She just leaves the door on the washer cracked when not in use. No problem.

The only knock I have is the stupid symbols all over the control panels. Would be happier with plain English words but that's one for the crack pipe.

Fisher Paykel..... I can't tell you about the other brands now however I can tell you about mine. Top load, minimal electronics, and they can catch a house on fire if you don't do some type of maintenance on the Duct work on the dryer. Bought in 2012 and zero issues....

I bought these based on the advice of my former employer who owns an Appliance store. In the mid 80's when I worked there Maytag ruled the world but no longer.

I payed out big 3 years ago and bought matching washer and dryer Maytag and thought I was doing good, the washer didn't last a year, they fixed it 3 times under warranty and told me it was unfixable the last time, I bought a new GE a few months ago and it seems alright so far, still too much electronics I think. My parents had a whirlpool that lasted from 1973 to 1989, I sure wish they made them like they used to.

We went to a local Mom and Pop appliance repair shop to get ours.
All manual controls and not a problem one with either the washer or the gas dryer in 5 years so far.
I think we paid 300 for the pair.

We've had our Samsung washer since '08. Bought it to replace a front-loader with the dreaded mold issue that they got sued for.
I would absolutely avoid front-loading washers for this reason. I think GE and Whirlpool are the same. Wouldn't surprise me if Maytag was, too, but I can't say for sure.

When Lori moved in, she was a pkg deal....came with these POS Maytags. I had a plain jane Roper, worked great. Traded the electric drier to a buddy of mine who had NG. Never an issue with the drier, had to replace belt and some kind of wear pads on drier that's it.
If I had my say I would get the cheapie, and chuck it as need be, BUT I'm not allowed to do skirtwork so I'll let her pick(within reason).
I'll check out makes you guys have mentioned, thanks!

We bought an LG top load hi efficiency washer & it works well. It takes longer to wash than an old style and it is more sensitive to loading evenly, but it spins so fast that the clothes take no time to dry. The only issue is that the tub is so deep, my wife has a hard time reaching the bottom. I would not go back to the old agitator style. Lots of electronics though.

We also bought the LG hi efficiency dryer. Bought it off the clearance rack cheap with a dent or two. I took it apart to straighten out the dents & discovered the guts of a hi efficiency dryer are exactly the same as an old dryer. Only difference is all the electronics & double the price. If you don’t use all the electronic crap they are a waste of money.

I would buy an LG again. You can save a lot of money if you are a cheapskate like me and buy scratch & dent. Mine don’t match (don’t care it’s just a washer, not a fashion statement). That allows a little more room for scratch & dent shopping.

Yep I'm a scratch n dent kinda guy as well Mike. Bent over the washing machine? You sure that wasnt planned?
Good idea Dave with beating the laundry with rocks down at the lake. :thumbsup:Not sure Lori would be impressed with me coming back 12 hours later and handing her fish to clean after the laundry:rolleyes:
If I still lived the bachelor lifestyle I'd drag the dirty laundry behind the boat on the lake and call it good....
Thanks guys
