This COVID-19 stay at home order has allowed me to get back to assembling a '69 340. The body is '69 Barracuda S fastback, 727, 3:23, 245R60/15 rear tires. Engine is rebuilt 020 over short block 9.5 compression, 69cc X heads with bowl work/steel exh. seats and slight clean-up cut. I need to decide which cam; I have a new MP P4452761 268/272 - 228/231 @ .50 lift with matching springs. But this is a very old cam design compared to the current cam offerings. In order of personal preference, I'm looking at the comp. cams 268AH...270magnum...XE262H. Yes, I know the XE268 is a popular 340 cam but I don't like the spec's of this cam for an automatic with power disc brakes.

I like the MP grind. It's not as archaic as you think. That whole line was redesigned in the late 80s to take advantage of the .903 lifter diameter. I know......it was the 80s but still......

I am considering using the same 268AH cam with my 340, 904 and 3.23 gears. I have power steering and power disc brakes as well. I want this is a mildly hot street cruiser, that the wife will drive from time to time. Am I considering the wrong cam?

The 268 will run fine with power brakes and a solid idle tune up. It needs 14-18 initial timing to get the tune up right in most every case.

Look at the voodoo 02 cam as well. The MP grind works too since you already have it. I prefer the voodoo 02-03 cam over the MP.

268 or any voodoo out performs the comp XT line (no matter how you define "perform"
Use a Lunati one or two sizes shorter

The DC 268 has more seat duration than the comp more like a 275 comp or lunati so decide on the rev range you want\I'd say the compression is ok for the mp but it might like more gear and so would the 268 chevy cam ib a mopar box from comp
that said it has a fatter nose so they wear well
you want a more modern cam go lunati or howard
xe line is popular due to the heard mentality- you can do better

Let's put it this way...I don't think you can go wrong with the comp 268AH. It's a nice step up from the stock 340 cam which is pretty mild. And a bit more lift than the new (old) MP cam I have.

the 268 276 stock cam has more duration than the comp 268 chevy cam
the comp has closer lca so it feels stronger down low and midrange
just moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic
the Lunati 268 IS a step up
but since it is a better grind you can use a 262 Lunati and still have more cam without oosing your low end (or even the 256 lunati) (or howard)

I suddenly realized that this might sound facetious to some guys; it was not meant to. It was meant as an AHA-moment; as in aha I learned something new here. I'm always learning new stuff from Wyrmrider, who has a wealth of cam data.
Hmmm nice recovery:poke:

The mopar cam is actually better than the other cams listed. Lunati or racer brown are the better ones. Also crower is a good choice. But since you got the mopar cam I would use it over the ones mentioned.

Who's hydraulic lifters are you gong to use?

Crower cam saver lifters are a good choice. If the mopar cam is the kit then the mopar lifters work good too.

The 262 MP cam is one of the newer ones
new being relative
much better than the 268 comp about the same seat duration
Expensive compared to Lunati and Howard etc
I would not buy one new
but if you have it- run it
It is NOT a fast rate cam
the 268 comp is, but over a much smaller effective lifter diamater
lube saver lifters- good idea
I wonder why Howard has them for chevy but not for mopar
right now I only know of Crower and Rhodes
any others?
easy to DIY

someone makes a chevy liftr with two flats they say HV pump but IDK
some are made so the flat does not go all the way to the bottom of the lifter
only lubes when on the base circle
Our Jag XKE had drilled camshafts with the hole right before the opening ramp
wonder why I never tried that on a ohv motor
should not be that hard to get lube into the center of the cam

Don’t use Comp Cams lifters. After cam break in...
