Be funny after the fix it runs just fine and you guys have egg on your face.

If the "fix" is lifters and pushrods as UTG and Nick say then it won't run fine . It will be the exact same, probably worse with the bearing damage. If they actually tear it down and fix it properly and get the crank machined professionally, new bearings, no mixed up rod caps, new cam bearings etc.... but keep that to themselves. Then what? If the proper way is taken and disclosed publicly then UTG and Nick still have egg on their face. J.Rob
 
I'm wondering what the newbie is out financially or his thoughts about all of this? Haven't really heard from him about it. I also get all of the negative comments about the build, but labels about meth seems to be wrong. If you don't like what he does or how he does it, so be it ....turn the page. Just my opinion.

Did you watch Tony live last night? He explained exactly what happened with the oil pressure loss and it totally makes sense. I had the same issue with my old 360 and a smaller base circle camshaft you need longer push rods because it'll create an oil leak from the lifter cup when the engine warms up.
It takes a real hack to not only put the rocker shaft on BACKWARDS, but to also not notice your pushrods dont even touch the lifter. Then continue with dirt, metal shavings, and **** leaking everywhere...Face it, the guy has ZERO business building ANY engine. Probably would screw up a briggs and stratton while telling you how much experience he has...
 
The guy who owns the engine said he spent a little over a thousand dollars on the build.

I must admit when I heard Nick say "no shellac on the cold plugs" I was shocked. I mean, I don't goop them all to hell, but I run a film of RTV around them with my finger. Never had one leak yet.

Stamped mild steel against rough cast. You need a little bit of something.

I miss stuff sometimes, everyone makes mistakes if you do it long enough, but there is wayyyyyyy more than a few mistakes in that build. I just seriously dont know why Nick's garage would even publish that video...kinda strange

With about as many exceptions as I have fingers on one hand, all of my builds have been so called "dirt road" builds. You know, just a hone with a dingleberry, only required machine work (I WILL NOT build one without resized rods and good rod bolts and the crank right) just minimal money spent. But they are CLEAN.
 
Not to hijack too badly, but......
Hylift Johnson A-2011R lifters, reboxed by Comp.

The failure here is the result of a loss of valvetrain control.
The pushrods are dancing/jumping around on the pushrod cup, they land on the thin sheet metal retainer, which collapses from the point loading, then is no longer able to retain the piston assy.

Normally when this happens, the retainers are riding around on the pushrods.
But when you encounter severe instability, I’ve seen them unbroken, but laying in the valley....... so the “float” was severe enough to let the retainer escape out from under the pushrod while it was jumping around.

The propose of that specific style of retainer is to preload the piston assy, so that no additional preload is necessary, while reducing the volume of oil in the piston assy...... which means the lifters can’t “pump up” and hang the valves open when “float” is encountered.

If you don’t run the valvetrain into pretty hard float, they hold up “okay”.
If you float them hard, and the pushrods start dancing around, the thin metal retainers are a little frail, and you end up with the scenario in the pic.

Now...... back to your regularly scheduled UTG build review.

If you removed the thin steel retainer and installed a regular tru-arc style of snap ring in those lifters, they would be fine.

You know guys, maybe this whole thing was a fake setup to make some kind of point? I just cant understand why you would post a video that apears to SHOW your incompetence, and think its going to get you more "followers" just doesn't make sense.
 
The thing that seems the oddest to me is........ there is probably 50-100 dynos between UTG and Nicks.
Why go that far?

“Back in the day”(in the 80’s) I used to do a lot of low buck re-ring jobs....... I never had any problems with them.
Most got hammered on pretty good by young guys with their “hot” cars.

It appears they got a free cam/lifter set from comp, maybe the dyno session was free to, from nick as a promotional thing for Nick's garage. Pretty funny there is a UTG sticker on a bag of oil dry shown in the beginning of the video....hmmm
 
Somebody needs to find the poor guy that owns that POS 318, and get him to join FABO, he would have been 1000% better off if he would have asked questions here first. I will even personally volunteer my time and labor, to re-machine that pile and make something positive out of it. Maybe a FABO collaboration to help the guy, what say yall?
 
I still want to see the outcome. I want to see what the little engine will do when it's all cleaned up and right.
 
I’ll try and keep this somewhat short.....
For a reference point only.

1990, at a machine shop I was working at there was a disassembled, used rebuilt 318 scattered around the shop.
Apparently it had been there a while...... abandoned.
Stock type short block, rebuilder cast pistons.
Bores looked okay, pistons looked okay, crank looked okay.
Tq and check mains and rods..... all okay.
I’m not really seeing why it was brought there in the first place.
Rebuilt, but used....... but not f’d up that I can see.
I buy rings, bearings, gaskets.

I had taken a low CR cast crank 340 in trade towards one of my other re-ring job motors.
I used the stock replacement cam & lifters, timing set, valve springs, rocker gear, oil pump, and oil pan from the 340 on the 318.
Found some 675 heads, did some mild porting, new guides, valve job, surfacing, etc.
Put it all together with a Performer on top. 1-5/8” headers, and tried a Carter 625 and 600vs Holley on it.
Made about 290hp.
I’d have to find the sheets for the tq, but 325-ish comes to mind.

I sold it to a guy and he put it in a 4wd Ramcharger(had to change the oil pan).

When you run out of talent, you fake it...... He may get more followers, some people enjoy that type of stuff.... In short, he's running out of content. It will only get worse from here.....

Wonder how many HP get used in grinding up metal chips, dirt, cam bearings and main bearings? Probably a good bit
