Fanboy getting hot and bothered?

Jake
No but people do make mistakes, I've seen people build high dollar engines with years of experience that made a mistake that cost an engine **** happens especially when you do it in a 13hr period

Somebody needs to find the poor guy that owns that POS 318, and get him to join FABO, he would have been 1000% better off if he would have asked questions here first. I will even personally volunteer my time and labor, to re-machine that pile and make something positive out of it. Maybe a FABO collaboration to help the guy, what say yall?

Make some videos and throw them on YouTube! You seem to have a lot of knowledge and I am sure a lot of people here, including myself, would love to learn... while also being entertained

I dont have time or interest in making YouTube videos. I make my living in my shop working for the public, not off of clickbait crap like "worlds first live 318 build" However....I DID offer my assistance to the guy that owns that 318, and I will be glad to film that if someone gets him in contact with me.

Not to hijack too badly, but......
Hylift Johnson A-2011R lifters, reboxed by Comp.

The failure here is the result of a loss of valvetrain control.
The pushrods are dancing/jumping around on the pushrod cup, they land on the thin sheet metal retainer, which collapses from the point loading, then is no longer able to retain the piston assy.

Normally when this happens, the retainers are riding around on the pushrods.
But when you encounter severe instability, I’ve seen them unbroken, but laying in the valley....... so the “float” was severe enough to let the retainer escape out from under the pushrod while it was jumping around.

The propose of that specific style of retainer is to preload the piston assy, so that no additional preload is necessary, while reducing the volume of oil in the piston assy...... which means the lifters can’t “pump up” and hang the valves open when “float” is encountered.

If you don’t run the valvetrain into pretty hard float, they hold up “okay”.
If you float them hard, and the pushrods start dancing around, the thin metal retainers are a little frail, and you end up with the scenario in the pic.

Now...... back to your regularly scheduled UTG build review.

If you removed the thin steel retainer and installed a regular tru-arc style of snap ring in those lifters, they would be fine.

Oooo, thank you very much! The only thing I can add is it never saw anything last 3K.
Can I get just the snap rings?

I have been asked to do this as well by a few people’s here and there. Same line. It would take a long time for me to produce anything. Some here @ FABO would pass on to the great car meet in the sky before I finish much of anything.
I does sound like fun though. I see 318WR is having fun.

But how about yourself?!?! Not that I’m asking or daring an engine build out of your channel. Just wondering.

43 if you want to reach out to him you get get him on you tube Luna Outlaws Garage LunarOutlaw’s Garage

Isn't the guy who built that engine a member on this site? Someone oughta send him a link to this thread.

I don't understand all the hate, though. Tony's a member here. He's a Mopar guy. He's one of us. Nobody knows the details. Did he even charge the guy, or was he doing it for free trying to show the guy a thing or two. Like "go clean that block up good" ....and the guy missed the boat. How do any of us know what happened to be able to judge someone so harshly that's helped so many?

A lot of things weren't right, but that doesn't make it Tony's fault. We don't know the whole story by a long shot. Did yall hear what Nick said about both he and Tony trying to show a young gun how to do things? I did.

It takes a real hack to not only put the rocker shaft on BACKWARDS, but to also not notice your pushrods dont even touch the lifter. Then continue with dirt, metal shavings, and **** leaking everywhere...Face it, the guy has ZERO business building ANY engine. Probably would screw up a briggs and stratton while telling you how much experience he has...
Agreed. The amount of trash in the filter and pan was unreal. I realize they were on a time deadline but come on. All this video did was show what a hack he is. Even when I was 17 and just starting out I knew things had to be clean and how could you possibly think 1/8" lash with a hyd cam would work out ok

Did any of you guys here see where I said I would personally machine, clean assemble and fix that botched up pill of crap for free to help the guy?

No hate Rusty I quite enjoy Tony’s and Nicks shows 43 offered his services to help him out.

And @RustyRatRod its not "hate" on the guy. It's the fact he cannot even build a $1000 "budget" build with free parts that can even survive a break in. Hes probably a awsome guy, but making money off clickbait YouTube videos is lame....especially when your work shows practically the WRONG methods to newbies who dont know any better.

Trying to show a young guy how to do it right doesn't involve making him spend a 1000 dollars on a re ring 318, not including the free sponsored parts, hauling it 1500 miles each way to a dyno to find out you have a pile of ****, then posting his humiliation on YouTube. All the while bragging about your 44 years experience, and your first ever "live 318 build"

i spoke with Nick afterthe video , he didn't have to show all the crap, but he is honest and he showed exactly what happened warts and all , he spent his time taking things apart to see what went wrong and showed all . he is very busy the time he wasted will not be paid for by the video . I have never known Nick to build crap . i had one build from him that I beat on for 7 years and the engine is still pristine looks like new inside after 25000 miles . It's a shame utg did not take enough time to do a proper build . The 3 utube channels took a chance on this build and it failed , Nick had nothing to do with the build all he gave was his time and dyno

But I just wonder how many of us here would have the gonads to post up mistakes like that? I've made them before. All of us have, but some sure talk like they haven't.

Uncle Tony was joking about doing a competition build blind-folded.

However, this is a somewhat related, true story:

When I was studying Auto Technology at Hartnell College in Salinas, California circa 1973-75, our class took a field trip to nearby San Jose, California to tour an engine rebuilder facility. The employee that was doing the hands-on final assembly was a deaf/mute and it was mentioned that his handicap probably came him an edge when checking fit and tolerances because he had a very well developed tactile sense.

Did you watch Tony live last night? He explained exactly what happened with the oil pressure loss and it totally makes sense. I had the same issue with my old 360 and a smaller base circle camshaft you need longer push rods because it'll create an oil leak from the lifter cup when the engine warms up.
I gotta go watch that because I been wondering what happened to the lifters to cause it

That's very cool of you.
THATS how I feel is the right way to help a guy out, not try to make it a YouTube clickbait deal. That's why I suggested a FABO collaboration to help this guy out, I'll do anything I can personally to help this guy.
