I have had problems with refilling my car forever. Gas will burp out all over while refueling. I know I'm not the only one with this problem. I've tried going very slow which isn't really working like it should. While refilling slowly, fuel comes out of the vent tube. I was just told not come back to the gas station until I fixed the problem. Some of you guys have modified the filler neck. I have an idea that might work to stop the fuel from coming out of the vent tube. The fuel gauge sender on my car has a vent line that I have plugged. Will connecting the vent tube to the vent on the sender solve the problem?

While I don’t have an early a body, the slope of the filler neck in my Scamp also has the gas burping out as it’s almost full. I just ease up on the trigger and place my ear close to the nozzle and listen for when the tank is almost full. I glance at the gauge when stepping out of the car to give me an idea how much it’s going to take to fill and then start easing up on the trigger when I’m near that.

I’m sure some folks at the station think I have a sniffing problem.

The vent line has nothing to do with filling the tank. What I mean by that, is that if you sealed the filler neck against a nozzle and depended on the tank vent it would build pressure

The way these work (at least on the fillers I've seen) is that there is a divider inside the filler neck nearly the full length. It probably should have been longer, and maybe should have had a deflector inside the neck to insert the nozzle UNDER. The upper part of the divider is for air coming back up the filler neck as the fuel cascades down the "under" part.

I also believe much of this is because of high pressure stupidity on the part of gas stations. There's at least one here locally I simply don't go to. At the time, it "kicked" the nozzle it had so much pressure. Felt like a high pressure hose. It puked all over a couple of my vehicles. I have a 69 filler neck I'll try 'n get photos

Some photos of a 69

Below, the complete unit. Vent is 1/4 tube, comes out near the top of the neck, up high against the inside top of the rear quarter, then bends down and follows the neck, down into the frame rail, where it simply open ends. You can see the bottom of the divider in the main neck sticking out at the bottom. It is leaning here towards how it sits in the car, except moreso. The gasket sits flat on the trunk floor, so the "U" in the vent line and the gasket are both pretty much level as it sits in the car

Below, the bottom end. The lower part below the divider is gas flow, air going back out is in the top half. The divider ends about?? 10" from top of filler

Below, a view through the filler neck. This is distorted, as the divider appears to come close to the top, but again, it ends some 10" or so from top. Fuel is in lower section as this is slanted, the air at top in this photo

A good view of the vent. These seem to work well, and are simple. These use a sealed unvented cap, so if you REALLY got it full, and parked on a sidehill with the filler on the downhill side, worst that "should" happen with a proper sealing cap, is that fuel would siphon down the vent, drain out the frame rail, and onto the ground. The top cap area forms a "vacuum break" and as soon as the level would reach the vent tube, the siphon would stop

Below another view of the bottom end. Fuel is lower, air is upper. You can see fuel section is somewhat larger

I’ve been in the automobile business all my life !! I’m 54 years old now ! Every slow fill or no fill situation that I can remember being involved with was due to a venting issues of the fuel tank ! Whether it be mechanical or electric !! Maybe one case there was an actual issue with the fill tube!! Guys I’m here to tell you I don’t know everything.. and don’t claim to !! But I don’t understand plugging a vent in the fuel system and at the same time having a slow fill problem that’s caused by a venting issue ?? So apparently than can be another issue besides venting ???

A couple of observations / questions...

Does the pump have a bellows that seals to the car filler opening?

On my Dart, and my local gas station, there are no bellows. While I am filling I go get a couple paper towels and wrap them around the nozzle to effectively seal the nozzle tube to the filler neck. Not air tight but enough to catch fuel that might overflow.

Also I insert the filler nozzle as far as it can go.

Back in the day filler nozzles were larger in diameter. I think that makes a difference.

My '65 Barracuda is apart, and I've been concerned about this problem too. 20 years ago I had gas leak onto the quarter panel of a freshly painted car damaging the finish, don't want to go through that again. Just took the filler tube assembly from the '65 off the shelf, tried to blow through the vent tube and couldn't! It was plugged and I didn't even realize it, blew compressed air through it and some dirt and fine rust particles came out. Before I install it I'm going to run a speedometer cable though it to really clean it out. Wheelsport, thanks for bringing this up!

i think it was Laysons that offered a modified filler tube for the early a-bodies.

I just looked through Layson's catalog and couldn't find anything regarding a modified filler tube for an early A body, so if you know what the differences are, I'd like to know. I'm also curious as to how the tank vents to the atmosphere because I think the gas cap is non-vented (my cap is not here right now to examine).

I do the same thing when filling my -64 Dart.
I might need to give that a shot on my ‘64. The weight of the handle pulls the nozzle away so I end up having to hold it. Perhaps upside down will help

I’ve got different issues with fueling as well. I can get 10-12 gallons total in there (out of 18) and then it starts to leak. Seems to be coming from where the filler neck meets the tank. I have a new gasket on the way to see if that will fix it

lube both the gasket and the new tube .

Do y’all sell the converted filler tubes or do we have to send in our own to be converted?

I have the same problem with my 69 Swinger. Saw this on an earlier FABO thread on this same topic a few months ago. Have not purchased/tried it yet, not sure I understand how it is installed.

I think @slantsixdan mentioned those in a thread a few years back. May be he has tested one and can give us a recommendation.

It appears that it fits in snuggly with your filler tube where the gas cap is, reducing the diameter there to properly fit a modern pump. I’d be interested to see if that works, as it’s significantly cheaper than getting the tube recored to fit

Exactly. For $15 + shipping it would be worth a try.

Ill order one and give it a shot. If it works I’ll let y’all know, if it doesn’t, I’ll let y’all know that too
Perfect. I could use a couple myself. My 66 is worse than my 70 Swinger but I am careful with the Swinger. It has paint! LOL

My 64 Dart is missing paint right under the gas cap where it’s all been eaten up by the mess that Is fueling with a smaller pump. Hopefully this will prove good and hold the pump in place, and Prevent spillage

My 65 dart spews the gas on fill. The only way I’ve stopped the issue is to slowly fill it and listen till it’s close and stop. All my fuel tank stuff is factory.
