lumpiest cam

My 509/292 is lumpy!

Sounds like you want more than that though!

yep, like an idioti sold my nos 292/508, dont care aboutperformance, just want the stupid idle

That .508 cam will be WAY lumpier than any whipdoosh or thumpr ever will be. Plus, if you advance it a little more than the cam card it'll pull pretty good.

just put a 590 solid in and be done

The idle you're looking for and the non caring performance you're looking for. lol
but she'll sound real ratty. lol blup blup blupity blup. lol

Pull one plug wire...cheaper

I had a MP oval track cam that was on a 106 LSA.
(288/.499/106, IIRC...)
Sounded like a lumber jack on crack, chopping away.... @750 rpm.

You want a choppy idle, a tight LSA will do it well.

step 1 - need more info about the entire combo. I like my old comp solid 306/.555" cam sounds bad with 11.5 :1 and 1.75" headers and edelbrock 2.5" muffs

Hughes Whiplash in a 318. Sounds angry! at about 2500 rpm it smooths out and sounds like grandma's 318! LOL

Or close the choke half way. Roll coal while your at it lol.... The best of both worlds.....

The 590 MP Solid is a nasty one. Unless you have everything else to make it a worthy adversary don't feel bad when something that's quiet as a mouse leaves you at the light. But as you stated that's not your priority.

If it's attention you want, this cam will get you there....

Good tuner can make it idle any way you want.
Might not run wortha chit ! !

So funny, we used to make these changes in search of speed/power.
Now we just need a recording ! !

My 292/292/108 didn't sound lumpy hardly at all, until I idled it right down sloooooooow. And I had to retard the timing some. Maybe it just got lost in the Dynomax muffs, or the turndowns, IDK.
I wasn't interested in the sound anyway.
What I was interested in was the top-end rush.

Yeah 106 with a buncha overlap will do it alrightee.

You have made mention of that cam in various posts through the years but I’m not sure I ever have read about the actual set up it was in, application, or your thoughts about the performance during the period of its use. Not wanting to run this thread off the rails, but could you give a brief synopsis of all that?

300°/.500 was a pretty lumpy cam back in the day. I sold a lot of TRW TP series cams to the Chevy guys. They wanted one just like Joe had! LOL

I can give you a synopsis of that, I have run that cam in my 340 for the last eight years or so. Mopar performance hydraulic Circle Track camshaft for 8th mile tracks. Pulls like a Demon from about 3500 to 6700

Wow, um, really? Dang, so long ago... ummm
Well SURE!

9.8-1 zero deck slugged, stock port 360 J 2.02/1.60 heads.
I used a Torker II-360, LD-340, and *I Think* I had the RPM-AG up top. I used Carters, AFB 600 & a 750 AVS. No Holley’s. Chrome box ignition, OE distributor, Summit headers into a 2-1/2 exhaust. I don’t remember the mufflers. But it stopped at the rear axle.
MP Viscous fan. 4spd/4.10’s ‘73 Cuda.

The chop was enhanced due to the stock carbs. No able to do there job until tinkered with. The idle was erratic. (Step up spring issue.)
Even after a spring adjustment, I had a little trouble with a good idle. (More of a rookie thing) I noticed this cam seems to have a good rate of lift. Against other MP cams, the oval track cams have more lift against duration vs the other cams. (Example; 292/.509 vs 288/.499) If you have run a easy going Crane on a wide 112 against a newer cam like a Comp XE and add 1.6 rockers, you can hear and feel the action.

Being an oval track cam designed for a 3/8 flat track, it had a narrower power band than what I was used to. (Or so it seemed) The cam delivered mad house torque and a good top end pop.

What heads up top?
Ported?
