Ive been doing body & paint for some time now. From doing small patch work to full quarters, floors you name it. I had a guy wanting me to write up a price for his brother to remove & replace both quarters, outter wheel wells, trunk floor, trunk extensions & all door hinges. Not to mention take out rear & front windows that are already broke. I gave him a price of $3,000 That's labor & materials to do the job. Replacing all factory seam sealer & doing any body work to the quarters. He looked at me like I had two heads & then said o that's with you buying all the body parts. I said no I don't think so. He came back with 'well we will probably just send it to AMD & have them do it' Am I way off base with my price or is he just being a cheap *** ?

For what you proposed and the price, I wish you lived near me.
Around here, $3K won’t buy much bodywork. If he gets quality work for less, don’t post it here- it’ll make me sick. :BangHead:

And that's all if the doors, fenders ect. don't need work. If he does want me to do it all wait till he get my price on painting it. O its a 70 GTX not that it matters

That's a very low price. I would never put a price on a job like that. Time and materials. Pick your rate.

I think that is a very reasonable price. Would you consider taking on a 70 Dart Swinger, if so lets talk
R&R both quarters, outer wheel house, and trunk extensions.
sending pm

I'd bet he'll be one of those people that are never happy with the results, no matter how good, might be better to take on another job and tell him you're too busy.

This is like the guy that sees a guy with a nice classic car at the gas station and offers some stupid, unrealistic price.
"Thats a nice Dart....I'll give you a THOUSAND dollars for it right now!"

Curious to hear what AMD quotes for the same job.

My bet is at least double.

Agreed.
And if the guy comes back, don't deal with him.
He is obviously hard to please, and will never be happy with your work.
Your quote was low IMHO.

Lmao, AMD isn't going to do him any favors, they have a waiting list and they ain't cheap. Nobody works for free. Don't 2nd guess yourself. He'll end up being a headache that they don't make pills for.

If he comes back I would turn him down no matter what he wanted to pay after that.

^^^^^^^^^THIS RIGHT HERE^^^^^^^

If he does come back, send his *** picking. This guy doesn’t understand value and all the work that goes into this type of thing.

You’ll never make him happy and he will be a constant pain in the ***.

You got lucky. This guy would have driven you nuts.

BTW, I think you cut your bid a bit thin. You should be charging more than that.

I would NOT do the job after that comment, he will definitely be a pain in the *** customer

I think your price is low, and agree with others that he will be the customer from hell if he comes back. If he does, tell him you are booked up for at least a year before you could possibly get to it. Shake his hand and say "Thank you very much" as you show him the door.

Good work ain't cheap, cheap work ain't good. I did big job like that for a "buddy". Fuckhead still owes me two grand. "I didn't think it would be THAT much work!" he says. He brought me a belly-dragging 68 B'cuda "vert. Seriously, this thing sat flat on the trailer it was so rusty. "What's it gonna need?" He looked at me funny when I said EVERYTHING. Don't sell yourself short! Get paid!

This has regret written all over it. I bet this guy is the type who chews down the kid who cuts his grass from $25 to $15. Steer clear, you dont need the headache. He gave you a warning loud and clear as to the the type of jerk he is. Heed the warning.

Im doing a 67 Barracuda for a friend @ $40 hr rate. By the time im done he will be right around the $8,000 mark.
-Quarter panels (full)
-Outer rockers
-LH inner fender
-Trunk extensions
-Fender patches
-Convert to dual fuel tank straps
-Half dozen misc small patches
-Epoxy prime, seam seal
Sounds like im going to end up putting the whole car in primer and painting the bottom side of the car. That will likely end up another $2K.
The only way someone will not balk at these prices is if they have experience doing body work. Most people dont realize the amount of time it takes just to replace one small panel. Your price was more than reasonable. I agree with everyone else and say you should move on.
If I had to guess I bet AMD would charge $80-$100 /HR shop rate. Anyone who quotes this kind of work by the job is screwing themselves.

And 40 bucks an hour is CHEAP. I’d bet AMD is well over 100 bucks and hour and most likely are 120 bucks an hour.
