So I started a thread this spring regarding. Doing a mean 318 rebuild or go for a 328 stroker. Here’s the thread...

Mean 318...or stroker....hmmm

I took my time and did it all myself and so far so good. It’s now running so I’m on to the tuning stage.

the specs... 1977 318 block, bored 40 over so technically we have a 392. Scat kit which came with cast crank scat forged I beam rods, icon forged step dished pistons (23 cc dish). Went with 0.005 clearance on pistons to cylinder wall and went with 0.020 ring end gap on top ring and 0.022 on the second rings.

block was align honed, and I went with ARP main studs. I went with a kevko 6 quart pan with kick outs which needed the front passenger corner trimmed up as well as a notch in the k frame for clearance. I posted some pics in another thread.

I did a few of the oil mods (like drilling out certain oil passages to 1/2 inch, adding extra holes to the oil filter base plate, and Doing a bit of work on the milling high volume pump. You can refer to the guitar Jones oil mods if you want to see what his mods were although he want all the way and I just did some of the basics.

block was decked and only needed 0.010 on one side and 0.005 on the other to get me to zero deck. For stage one of my build with my reused mildly ported 360 iron heads with overuse valves and 64 cc chambers I will have 9.4:1 compression. I checked the heads and replaced the valve seals and lapped the valves just to give it a bit of a refresh. I also reused my Crower 224/224 .465 loft cam.

Howard’s cams billet double roller timing chain and a fluidampr were added. I reused the Weiand action plus intake, 750 vac secondary carb and Doug headers.

I assembled everything and mocked it up on the engine stand so I could get a nic visual of the completed product. It fired right up every seems good and I took it for a few spins.

future plans for stage two include aluminum heads, Edelbrock air gap intake, and a bigger cam. For now she’ll do as is. Along the way I had som questions and this forum cam through so thanks boys. Happy hot rodding.

Naw, I just love the sound of a healthy motor! I know how I felt when I fired up my new build.

How much was the stroker kit and who did you buy it from?
$1423 for the scat kit which includes, Scat cast crank which was balanced For this kit, forged scat I beam rods, forged icon pistons, Hastings piston rings, clevite 77 main bearings, clevite rod bearings. It came from summit racing.

My stage one build is pretty mild, so not tearing it up too much yet. I also have a stock type used clutch which probably wouldn’t be up to the task if I were too abusive to it.
sure don'tsound like a mild build . Good luck and get some sound clips and videos up
