I have an opportunity to purchase one. It's got a blown band which took out the valve body, plus it is a 4X4 version.Question is where to find a 2wd output shaft and housing? Am told the o/d unit is intact. Will be looking at it next Sunday.

My question would be how to control it in a "simple" way. With that "E" on the end, that brings up some challenges. Maybe @TrailBeast will chime in and share what he did. But he's a genius. I'd never be able to figure all that out. You ain't stupid like me so maybe you can.

You ain't stupid like me so maybe you can.Lol you're anything but stupid Rob! Maybe all it needs is a valve body swap.Anyways hopefully someone else jumps in.

Since the valve body is junk, wouldn't an RH or 727 valve body work? Then you could just use two switches for the lock-up and overdrive. Or you could use the Compushift Mini for the 46RH overdrive/lock-up.

46re has the electric valve body. It has a 8 Pin plug down on the driver side of the transmission. I don't think that's what you want.
The 46rh has a hydraulic control valve body. It should have a 3-pin connection down on the side of the transmission. This is the one you want.
This is the one that you put the two toggle switches in the vehicle and you can turn the overdrive and the lock up on and off with.

I was thinking this but was also hoping the re would be able to be run with some sort of aftermarket computer. I think Fast offers one,but only for the Gm trans.

So there no real advantage in using the re ,other than they're literally layin around everywhere.

I've been told I think Transgo? has full manual conversions for the RE. That at least would allow you to shift it with no electronics

I'm pretty sure the case for an RH is different than RE, along with at least one of the shafts

Makes sense that the cases are different. The rh is using a manual governor. The re everthing is controlled by a computer. Not even a mention of the 46re at transgo.Seems so far the only game in town is the megashift computer.

There is a trans controller for an RE, but it's almost 800 bucks. I feel like I remember somebody putting a 727 valve body in a 46re, but I'm probably mistaken. Maybe check www.car-part.com to see if there is a 518 near you. Might pick up a good rebuilder fairly cheap.

I would pass on this transmission unless you have a four-wheel drive that needs a part or two from it.

I made my VB full manual and have two switches for lock up and OD, works good.

Lol crazy Canadian autowrecker wants $950 for an A518.Good lord.smh..

Changing a 4x4 RE to run in a non computer 4x2 and then having to buy the computer to control it would be a major expensive pain in the ***.
IMO a 42 or 46 RH with hydraulic shift controls would be WAY simpler and WAY cheaper.
Been running a Transgo stage 2 kitted 42RH in my Dart behind a mild built 5.9 for 5-6 years without a single glitch.
I designed and built the speed adjustable automatic shifting OD and converter lockup sytem.
The entire trans, converter, 7290 yoke, shift kit, OD and lockup kit accessories ended up around $500
Trans, converter, 7290 yoke and electrical connector all came out of a 95 Dakota 5.2 truck.
I currently run 3.55 rear gears for around town and Runs 2,500 rpm at 80mph in OD and converter lockup.
Right at 25 mpg on the hiway.

Thanks Greg. I couldn't remember if you had the E or the H.

Converting from 4x4 to 4x2 involves switching to the 2wd overdrive. Get a later one, they improved over the years. As for the computer bit, not so easy to just put in an earlier valve body. Better to start with a 95 or earlier unit. Shouldn't be too hard to find a first gen Dakota or 2wd Ram truck in a junkyard. I just pulled a 42RH for $200.

Yup I agree with you 100%.Initially this option seemed like it might be an at hand alternative to a 518.The trans is only a few blocks away. But just to make it work is going to be a major pita. Only problem with my location is 100% of the trucks here are 4X4 due to the heavy winters and mountainous terrain. Will need to get super lucky to find a 518 locally..Was actually considering a chev o/d because those are available. It's all good.I'll just hang in there and see what turns up.
