I was curious who out there is running a retrofit hydraulic cam in there s.b. mopar ?
I have a 410 stroker finally going together after years on the shelf.
I have a lunati solid flat tappet .
I'm thinking of possibly switching to hydraulic roller ?
What cam are you running ?
How do you like it ?

Non roller block?

Only real reliability came from using a roller la block with factory hyd roller lifters on a biklet lunati cam w/ .586 lift...with crane malonized /coated steel gear

I went with Hughes cam and their retro roller lifters on my 408. It's nice stuff.

I would run the HR lobes with solid roller lifters and not look back. Among other things the pushrod geometry will thank you.
Can you school me on how it works ?
Does that mean more maintenance?
Like adjusting lifters ?

You set the lash at .002 cold so it will start. After that, you may have to check them every 5000 miles, probably can go more than that once you get comfortable.

Google “hydraulic roller lifter noise”....... read a bunch of the threads that come up....... then decide if that’s really the path you want to take.

No, they aren’t all really noisy, but it shows that’s its a very real possibility.

Just educate yourself in that retrofit hydraulic roller cams aren’t always “roses and unicorns”.

This is one of my favorites:

There was a thread somewhere that went with this video.
The thing that surprised me the most from that thread was....... they dynoed that motor making that kinda noise!!
If I’d have had that thing on the dyno making that racket(and I think it made around 500hp??)....... it would have been over right then.

I seem to recall they swapped the lifters, and maybe the cam too..... and it ended up being more normal.

Do you recall?
Was that noiuse cause by retrofit hydraulic rollers?

I run a Comp retrofit roller setup in my 340.
The cam makes great power with the right convertor.
The hyd rollers suck, they are noisy and limit any real power after 6000 rpm.
If I did not have to remove the heads to swap them out to solid rollers they would be gone.
If you are not racing your car save your money, they are not worth it.

Jimmer I use the Hughes retro solid lifters motor in my LA 360 stroker has done 11k . No issues at all , when I pulled the engine due to rear main leak I inspected cam lobes while the sump was off . All lobes looked good no wear mind you I do have it idling @ 850rpm to allow some splash and use a quality synthetic oil with zinc .I only adjust if I can hear any out of sync. Once they are adjusted they are quiet . On occasions of got to really listen as the injectors are more louder than the rockers and can throw you off.

I’m pretty sure the video goes with these threads:

No oil to rockers but have oil to lifters what rmp to flow shafts with all new stuff

HELP!!! Hughes Retro Fit Roller Lifters Problems

Like I said, my main takeaway from this is....... this type of **** can happen.

I think there was recently(this year?) another thread about someone having one lifter that just wouldn’t pump up.
They finally got curious enough to pull the offending lifter apart, only to find the feed hole coming through the body wasn’t drilled all the way through.
No oil getting into the lifter.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was something similar affecting all 16 lifters in that video.
That’s what it sounds like to me....... 16 empty hyd lifters.

I use the ball to ball pushrods with oil through

I have a Howards hyd roller in my 418. Special ordered by Mike at B3 Racing, he spec'd the cam and Morrell tappets. You might give him a call. I haven't had any issues with the cam. Lift is in the 550 range, duration in the 220's.

I run this same cam with hyd rollers. 67 cuda with a 340 and 1.6 rockers in Eddy heads and it sounds like the OE 273 commando would sound like with its solid cam. 16000 km and haven't adjusted it for 2 seasons. maybe a check up this winter. P.S. I've seen 6700 on the tell tail.

Be careful that the lifter does come to far up or down and uncover the oil band. This results in low oil pressure. On LA blocks the depth of the chamfer on the lifter bore is very inconsistent. Tubing or bushing solves the problem.

That is one of the reasons for going through Mike at B3 Racing. Before you just go and buy a cam and paint yourself into a corner, call him. Mike will special order a hyd cam and tappets for your application. You will have to special order your pushrods, rocker arm type, and don't forget the geometry kit. I also have Trickflow heads. It's almost a like putting a puzzle together, you need the correct pieces, not pieces from another puzzle that don't fit.
