It looks the same as a mini starter for a V8 to me. Can anyone verify this for me? I’d like to make just one trip to the parts store.

TIA

Looking on Rock Auto, they look different.

4.7

Well it says 5.9 and 4.7. Man, I hate this stuff too. Sorry not much help.

yea, but those old school starters are just anchors ~ this thread might help
Mini starters

I like the first generation of mini starters the best. I don't like the newer lighter ones with the plug in terminal. I prefer the ones with the stud and nut like the one you linked above. We tried a couple of the ones with the plug in terminal on my son's 10.7 compression 360 and they struggled to turn it over. The one like you posted spins it really well.

I would think that if both bolt holes are threaded, that ain't it ~ so if the one Sam put up is 4.7 correct, that ain't it :BangHead::BangHead:

All I know is, you cannot go by photos posted on internet "parts" sources. They are often a "generic", a "representative" photo.

Here's a used one I found on Egag. It clearly claims to fit a 2002 4.7 and is clearly different from the "nose cone" style you need for a 5.2/ 5.9

I'm guessing there might be an "early" and a "late"

I just went out and looked at 3 of the 5.2/5.9 starters I have in the shop and all 3 have the gear proud of the mounting face, whereas the pic you found and the one I posted show the gear recessed behind the face.

I’m going to pull that pig starter out Sunday (I’m not...the nephew is coming over and HE is doing it) so I can see what it is.

Unreal. Half the starters look like a real V8 and he other half look like the phony 4.7 junker.

The more things change, the more I WISH they stayed the same. Mopar Sam

The starter that Sam put in post 4 is the right one. I know I’m late to the party here, but I went to the garage and shot a few pics for you. I have a 545RFE sitting on a cart, and had a mini starter that we all love sitting on the shelf. No way, no how will the mini starter bolt up. The starter you need has threaded bolt holes, and the bolts come thru from the backside of the bellhousing. A mini starter has open holes, and the bolts go thru from the front like old huge by large starters. Hope the pics help.

It's a 2004 545RFE from a Dakota with a 4.7, and a mini starter that fits 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum motors in Dakotas, Durango's, and Dodge vans and pickups. If he has a 4.7 motor, it will have either a 45RFE or a 545RFE.....which you can't tell apart by looking at them.
