I will be putting insurance on the 68 Barracuda in the next month. I was comparing Hagerty and Grundy and found some interesting differences.

For both quotes I stated a $20,000 agreed value insurance policy.
Haggerty quoted $334.00 per year
Grundy quoted $160.00 per year

Hagerty as a $500 deductable
Grundy has a $0.00 deductable

They both say unlimited driving as long as the car is not the primary driving vehicle.

Hagerty and Grundy both state that the primary storage location must be secure and locked.
And they both allow overnight parking in an unsecure location like a hotel parking lot. The deal breaker is that Grundy's coverage states that the overnight unsecured parking must be directly associated to a car event or car show. The Grundy insurance is not in effect if the car is parked overnight in an unsecure location on a pleasure trip. Hagerty insurance is in effect with overnight parking on a pleasure trip.

For me that takes Grundy out of consideration.

I believe that I will be purchasing the Hagerty insurance with the Hagerty Drivers Club towing insurance. I'll keep the towing insurance until I get some miles on the car.

So, if you're on a road trip to a car show and stay at a hotel on the way you should be covered. Correct? If that's right then you could stay anywhere with in, let's say, a 100 miles of a car show or event. I'm just throwing this out there because where I'm at there is a car show or event every day of the week for about 6 months out of the year. Steve

That is true, but if I have a loss I would not want to give an insurance company any reason to deny the claim. All insurance companies are nothing but a bunch of lawyers who deal with statistics and probability. None of them pay if they can wiesel out.

My car is insured with Hagerty.
I get the 5 year safe driver/loyalty benefit and it costs me a little over $200 a year.
The restrictions are:
Under 500 miles per year
Pleasure use only
Stored in the winters in a locked approved by them garage
The car must remain reasonably stock appearing, such as no roll cages or headers etc.

I actually posted a link to my build thread on here to prove how the car was built and it remains very close to the original build thread to this day............

Click on the link at the bottom of my post if you would like to look at it.

Hagerty last year also included a free membership to Motor Trend On Demand for the full year as well as discounts from certain parts suppliers.
And a free magazine in the mail.

I'm certainly getting my money's worth from them...........

That magazine isn't free. It's $45 a year, which you automatically get signed up for, they don't ask.

I spoke with a Hagerty rep on the phone. I asked about a discount or being able to suspend coverage in the winter months as in Indiana I will not be driving the car and it will be in locked storage from December to April. The rep told me they do not offer suspended coverage and there is no discount for not driving the car in the winter. I mentioned Autocross and he also told me Hagerty would not insure the car if it was involved in Autocross. I had him speak with someone to verify that and he came back with the car would not be covered while on an Autocross track. That is what I expected.
Wonder if it would be better to try and find a local Hagerty Agent and not deal with someone who works out of the Corp office?

Okay.
So my insurance costs me $158 a year then.
And the magazine costs me $45 a year, and it is a good read.
Either way, I'm happy.........
(This is Canadian Dollars BTW)

I understand and if going with Hagerty will make you sleep better at night that's the one you should get.

Interesting, I didn't know they were so affordable.

after reading your post I looked up my Hagerty papers and I'm allowed 5000km/year?

Hagerty asks YOU on their request for insurance form to declare how many miles you're going to drive a year, yet they don't ask for odometer readings! They don't dictate your mileage.
Best part is the days of old where you needed to pay for an appraisal before anyone would insure you are gone.

I talked to several people and most are using Haggerty. That's who I plan on going with as well.
I think most of them base it on an agreed value. You usually have to provide pictures of the vehicle.

I use Grundy for insurance, have for years. I'm getting ready to renew my 71 Dart which will cost me $436 for the year. My Dart is insured for $35,000. Pleasure car only with no set mileage.

The states in the USA have differed auto insurance rules, it is certainly different between the US and Canada.
In Indiana, Hagerty Classic Car insurance is for a secondary vehicle and the insured must have a primary car insured with some other company and the primary transportation cannot be public transportation or a motorcycle. With all that Hagerty did not specify a maximum annual mileage for the secondary vehicle they were insuring.

It's the same here, Hagerty won't cover your classic if you can't prove you have a primary vehicle insured via normal vehicle policy. I have 3 cars insured for a total of $355,000 with Hagerty for $2200 Cdn a year. Adding the Dart, insured for an agreed $55K, only added $200 to what was previously a $2000/yr premium on an agreed $300K value.

That sounds par for the course. The key make it or break it for me was whether the company will cancel the policy for autocrossing or other closed course events. I specifically called my company rep about this when one of the big name insurance companies was dropping people who they found out were going to the dragstrip.
Anyway it sounds like that's not an issue with Hagerty, they just won't cover damages related to an event.
That's good to know as at some point I may get classic plates...

FWIW there are companies that will provide various types of insurance for closed course events. Its often offered at registration for track events, such as Track Night in America.
Look at that - its Hagerty - offering collision, but not liability.

Check with American National. There are agents in Indy. My collector car and house insurance is through them and I get a refund every year if there is no claim. The refund is bigger than my car insurance premium so it's free.

Is this to insure your classic car or regular car.

Promises are great, and competitive prices but I'd like to hear stories of actual pay outs. How they actually handled a claim professionally or otherwise.

early on in the on line application form is the question "Will the vehicle be used in Racing events?"
I checked the Yes box as I do intend to run the car in some drag racing events as well a try Autocross, the response on the form was 'with Racing involved the vehicle is not eligible for American National Insurance'.
A pop up box opened and said to call 1 800 CAR BUFF, I did that and got an agent at American National who person to person told me 'with racing involved the car is not eligible for American National Insurance'.

How do the other companies handle racing? Probably the same. We should ask our racing buddies here to see if their cars are covered somehow. @pittsburghracer ?

I have Haggerty insurance on my Duster. I have never had a Claim fortunately but a good friend has. He was driving his 66 Coronet with a real healthy 440 down for coffee with some friends and had a heart attack at the wheel. At a stop sign he slumped over and mashed the gas pedal to the floor. Before his wife could shut the car off, he slammed into the back of an F150 and pushed the truck out into traffic.
According to him, Haggerty was excellent to deal with in this claim situation. He got his car fixed by the shop he chose.
At the end of the day, this story is the reason I recommend Haggerty when someone asks. Anyone will be great to deal with and promise whatever when they are taking your money but it's how they deal with a claim situation is what really matters. Not saying others are not going to be good too but this is the closest thing to direct experience I have had.

Also with my Haggerty policy I can purchase track day insurance. X amount of dollars for a day at the track. Can be done online easily. I can't remember how much per day but it was reasonable in my mind. I am thinking around 60 bucks.

I was up front and told the Hagerty rep on the phone that I intended to drag race and possible Autocross the car. I was told that Hagerty will insure the car but the coverage is not in effect while the car is being prepped for racing or participating in on track events. I will get a better definition on how Hagerty defines 'prep for a race'
Grundy and American National both declined to write any coverage on a vehicle involved in racing.
