Believe it is a 1". I use a large adjustable wrench on mine.Quick question. What size wrench does the nut take that takes the speedo cable off the 727? Looks like it might be a 15/16. Biggest wrench i have is a 7/8.
Now is when I miss the tool truck in the driveway. I had a set of stubby wrenches that work great for this kind of stuff.Believe it is a 1". I use a large adjustable wrench on mine.
Tool trucks are evil because they always cause us to see another tool that would be great for this or that! That's why when we are older we look at our array of tools and wonder how we ever did that!!!Now is when I miss the tool truck in the driveway. Exactly, by design. It was a fun ride for almost 30 years.Tool trucks are evil because they always cause us to see another tool that would be great for this or that! That's why when we are older we look at our array of tools and wonder how we ever did that!!!
I wasn't the one who installed it so it is wrench tight. I notice rtv around that area so I think that is where my 727 leak is coming from and while I am at it, I figured I put the proper speedo gear in it to.If you only tighten that nut by hand you will never have that problem.
There is zero reason it needs to be wrench tight.
Mine leaked too. It is likely the speedo gear pinion seal. I got a new o-ring for the speedo housing & smaller black seal for the speedo pinion from ebay. I've seen leaks where whoever put in the pinion seal did not fit it all the way into the recessed area before putting the metal retaining clip on. When they pushed the speedo gear in, it shifted the seal and a leak occurred. I've never had to use RTV to cover a seal leak on the housing. Simply put on fresh seals & applied a little dielectric grease (vaseline would work too) to the seal & pinion shaft. When inserting the gear into the housing, slowly insert it while turning it to keep the seal from moving out of place. You can even put 2 of those small seals in there.
It fixes a speedo gear shaft groove problem.
My thinking is. The seals are original and when they started to leak, rtv was just put around the outside instead of changing the seals. I could be wrong though, we shall see. I Just hope like hell it stops the majority of the leaks. I am so sick of atf everywhere.Gotcha.
I use just a thin film of rtv where the large O ring around the housing contacts the trans case.
It’s not enough to see from the outside.
Hopefully who did yours was just a little rtv happy and there isn’t some issue they were trying to fix.
Yeah, getting our older cars to stop leaking is an ongoing problem! When I got my car this past November, I found the gas tank leaked when I filled it full. When I got it home, I found the old owner put RTV type stuff all around the filler tank grommet to try to stop the leak. Guess it was too much work to simply change the grommet! I pulled the grommet, scraped all the "pookie" off around the tank opening, and installed a new grommet. Lubed the filler tube and reinstalled it. No more leaks. Funny! My thinking is. New/soft rubber seals and fresh gaskets can do wonders.Yeah, getting our older cars to stop leaking is an ongoing problem! people are lazy. But I understand that some people dont have the physical ability or even the cash to do a proper fix so they jerry rig it. But I cant have bad work on my conscious so I always try and do the job right.Yeah, getting our older cars to stop leaking is an ongoing problem!
