I am either going to motor plate the car and do a sbc 400 or a Mopar motor..

This is going to be a nasty street weekend car with a little track time.. Very ...

which way would you go? Resale is not important... Speed is on a budget..

MOPAR! Find a 360 or 5.9 magnum and build a 408 stroker and be done with it. Leave those 400's for the chevy guys

wrong place to ask this question. Bastardization is not gonna be popular here. Wanna go fast on a budget drop a 440 in

Small block Chevy I hope your not serious. You can build a 318 or 360 pretty cheap...
The newer 5.9 Magnum is different than the old 318 or 360.

I think one of the modern crate engines, there are sb mopar engines now that really rock right out of the box. If your dart has a really small K member like my 66 fish does, I am alittle gunshy of a BB in there.

yra no need for a bb in there for me...

I love the car, th ebody style and all but do not want something that is going ot be a pain in the a&^ to change the plugs or starter or turn the front tires and hit the headers..

So ya think dollar for dollar the 360 can make more power than a small block 400 chevy?

Dollar for dollar? Probably not but part for part I bet it will. ;) This is coming from a devout Chevy guy who just bought a Mopar. Pleeeeeeeaaaaase don't drop a Chevy motor in it. It just ain't right. When I had my Olds 442 all my Chevy buds were on my case to drop a BBC in it and in the last few weeks I've had a couple guys suggest that I drop a SBC in my 65 Cuda. It ain't gonna happen as long as I own this car. Stay true to it's origins. My plan of a warmed over 360/4speed combo should work quite well. ;)

Heres the best thing about a MoPar motor;

The intake manifold, RPM and the air gap model as well was given some of the highest praise by not only Vic Edelbrock as the finest intake of all the small block engines, but Dick Landy also said it was a fantastic peice.
The only down fall is price, in which, if it isn't a chevy, your paying more period. (Fact)

Why go the "Me too" route on an Chevy engine?

Also, Chevy pays for 18* heads. We have them stock with a stronger valve train. (Fact) Oh, also, a stock 340/360 head with 2.02 have been known to run into the low 12's without porting. A bodies are very good for this since there light and lighten up better than most cars.

Our stock blocks are stronger than there race blocks. (Fact)

.904 lifter, something the Chevy engine pays big for. This larger lifter allows much much more aggressive cam profiles. (Fact)

727, stupidly strong tranny
904, quicker in the 1/4 while useing less power, it will need a bit of beefing to equal the strength of the 727, so don't short sell it.

The 360 is an excellent choice for a street or strip. The longer stroke of 3.58 is really good for torque. 4.00 carnks kits are out there and at a good price worth looking into.

The 318 can be bored out preety far if it sonic checks for a .060 bore. That will get you close to the 4.00 mark. This would be a good thing to check out if it is possible to avoid valve shrouding and a larger valve. (1.88 intake)

At this point, the 318 becomes a good canidate for a high performance engine. (Not that you need to .060 over.)

Ok lets talk what's cheaper stock or modified?

Chevy uses pos dinky lil tooth pick rods and chevy guy's pay extra just to go to 6', whats stock sb mopar 6.123.

What's the rod stroke ratio of a pos 400?=1.46
What's a factory sb 318-340 mopar=1.84 and 360=1.71

As already mentioned what degee head do chevy guy's seek?=18*
What are mopar sb? 18*

What rocker gear do chevy guy's pay big for when racing?=shaft mount
What rocker gear do mopars have=shaft mount

What do chevy guy's do when they need more air flow? buy after market heads.
What do mopar guy's do? run there stock or mildly ported factory heads and kick the **** outta chevy guys at the strip.

Chevy motors suck.
Even smokey Yunick said the only thing worth while was the block
[.030 over max] LOL, everything else sucked.

Thanks 3404spd, I looked up and my post was gettin long winded.
Very good point on valve train and the rockers. I seen the price for the Jesel equipment. Nothing like starting at around $600 plus dollors just to step up to the plate. Rods, UGH! I forgot the rods. Good point.

The small block mopar is the easiest to stroke out of the big three. With modern I-beam rods NO notching is required unlike Ford and Chevy. A 4" crank drops right into a SB Mopar where as on a SB Chevy you have to do a lot of grinding just to get a 3.75" stroke crank in there. Guy I work with is building a 383 SB Chevy and he has to go with a smaller base circle cam to clear the rods. Mopar puts the cam up high in the block so no problems there.

More Power, means you will need stronger rear end,
and better brakes too.

For the money a 360 is hard to beat.

What rear end and gears are you going to use???

Build The Dodge 1 Time For 3-4 Chebys And Be Quicker More Consistant And Not Worry About Paying Homage To The Mopar God......in The Begining, God Created The Heavens And The Earth And He Saw That It Was Lacking.....so He Created Mo-par...and Saw That It Was Good.....now U Know What Really Happened....keep Coming Towards The Light......

rearend will be a dana 60.. 3:91's... or in that range mini tubbed with drag radials..

I found a motor today...

360 Mopar but it will have a glide behind it...

Thats right in fact if a chevy guy wants 4' stroke in his sb
it's time for a new after market block.lol
