Your dead on. Upon further inspection I found the cam damaged as well . The lobe was worn considerably. I unfortunately am not always up on things like the low zinc so it bit me in the ***.
Ok, I bought new lifters and cam. Put lifters in oil overnight and installed next day. Adjusted them down till play was out then turned them a half turn. With valve covers off, cranked engine over without starting for a few seconds. Started enginge. Lifters chattered for a few seconds and...
So I installed and new Comp Cams camshaft and lifters in my 408 Dart Sport last week. So I used the lifters in the kit. I tryed to pump them before install. But a few seemed weak so anyway had one completely collapsed yesterday and made an off sound.

At this point I wouldn't argue that the cup end may have been an oiling problem but the ball is not. More than enough oil sitting on top of the lifter. I can dig it out of the trash but all you going to see is a tube with no end. The ball just crumbled and fell off.
