Valve / Piston Clearance in 383

I don't want to step on Panas thread, but I believe this question was aimed at me. The short answer is : "It goes slower". It will happily rev to 6,000+, but it slows down. I have always heard fastest ET usually comes by shifting 500-1,000 rpms. past peak power. If true, this thing is flat...

Valve / Piston Clearance in 383

I didn't read every word of the last 3 pages, so if I am repeating any info, I apologize. I have a 383 in my Barracuda with the stock style no valve relief pistons. Mine sit .020" in the .030" over bores. I have a lightly milled set of "516's", with 2.08/1.74" nail head valves. (the nail head...

Darts first time to the track!!

I bet it makes more power than the 383 I had in my '72 4 door Valiant, and that ran 14's with 2.76's in the rear, crossing the stripe at the top of second gear.

    Transmission question

It's the same valve body, only the parking rod changes. I have wired them all the way back before, and street drove that way for years. Doing so makes for high shift points in drive, as the trans "thinks" you have the pedal to the floor whether you do or not. I got away with it as the car had...

    what starter to use

X 2. Thats what is on my 10/1 383, and it works great. Sheds some weight over the stock starter too.

    1968 '340' Barracuda vs 1968 '383' Road Runner

True, to a point. Some of those magazine test cars got some small slicks for the tests, and they still ran in the 14's. I had the lowest HP 383 ever manufactured, with 60,000 miles on the clock, a 120,000 mile trans, and 2.76 gears. I would have thought to see a greater spread in times. Even...

413 into a body, will Sanderson blockhuggers fit?

Thats a slick trick, Bob! I'll remember it.

    1968 '340' Barracuda vs 1968 '383' Road Runner

The mid-high 14 second times of these performance cars is interesting. Some while back, I put together a 383 1972 Valiant 4 door. I used only the finest in used junk, a 60,000 mile 1965 383 2 bbl. engine, no internal mods at all beyond lapping in the valves. It was a good thing I pulled the...

    what fuel pump?

With the Mallory 140 and a 3/8" line I wouldn't worry a bit. Lots of really fast cars got by with Holley blue pumps, and I like that Mallory pump much better.

    Can C-body manifolds be used?

I did a 72 Valiant with a 383, used C-body log manifolds. It had column shift/power steering. I did swap out the big steering column knuckle for a smaller swivel joint, as the drivers manifold dumped right there. I cobbled my own engine mounts together.

rumors from an old timer to a newbie

As far as the heads already on your '74 vintage engine, they will flow as much or more as any other factory head. The pistons in that engine are the cause of the lower compression rating. While it is true a few casting number heads have smaller combustion chambers and will raise your...

    383 horsepower

If you are about -.020" below deck, and are running 2.08/1.74" valves, with a typical composite gasket, you will be really close with piston to valve contact. If you are running stock rocker gear it may save you as you won't get full lift due to them typically not being a true 1.5 ratio. I...

    Bring it on

If I read your first post correctly, you don't want to go with aluminum, I.E. aftermarket heads. To make what I would guess to be a 600 crank HP 440, you are going to need a really well thought out combo of intake, cylinder head flow, cam timing and exhaust. I am pretty sure by the time you...

    Bring it on

500 to the wheels is a stout 440, I'm guessing around 600 HP at the flywheel. Good compression, spend the money on the heads, you'll need them to hit 600 HP.
