The D44 is stronger than the 8.75, the 44 and 8.75 share the same ring gear size.
In larger hp apps the 44 doesn't have the cap walk issue that the 8.75 does have.
I would use Dana for the gears in the 44, the axles also will be fine, but there are aftermarket options if you need them
