Weld a lock out stop in the shift gate between drive & neutral so you need to depress the button enable a shift into neutral.

I'm more familiar with the plastic being a white translucent material that transmits the aqua colored dash light above them. The dark brown color of mine pictured above appears they have been cooked & they have shrunk !

Redfish, As it happens a friend of mine who restores old radios has used the same method to reproduce broken /missing radio knobs & luckily another friend has a good set of buttons which we can take a mould of so hopefully there might be light at the end of the buttons yet !
