Yep - we polished out the gear box. It was just a lot of sanding and then some more sanding. You just have to get finer and finer until you eventually can use polishing compound to buff it out. We also did parts of the engine, as you can see in the below picture.
We got lucky on the powder coating, we took our freshly sandblasted parts down to a local company that doesn't do any public work. They did all the parts for $100 cause it was so easy for them to just throw them in with the other stuff. We didn't have much choice of colors, but I kinda like the grey. Ironically it cost more to sandblast the stuff.
