I have this issue and need some help please! I am sure somewhere this has been talked about before.
I have a 3.91 in a 4.89 case. It is the cone style rear end. Can it be rebuilt, or upgraded to a clutch type unit? I have seen new Auburn clutch type units, but what about setting it up wth the clutch type. I thknk I read you have to change the carrier bearings, but other than that it is a bolt in swap once it is setup.
I have also read some about cutting and shimming, but can I buy a new unit and or replace with a clutch type? If so where is the best place to purchase from? The car is not that heavy, it is a 64 Dart with a 416 stroker and 727 manual shift, 3k stall. Mostly a street car, some strip, but I am sure I will put the pedal down to the wood.
If I was to have it rebuilt where would I get the specs on how much to cut etc? Oh so many ??'s. I just want to do it once and what is best for the car and me.
Thank you
Dave
