Can anyone give me the part number for a 70 dart manual steering gear box. Going to a yard to buy one and want to be sure. I've found a couple on line. More than one and i'm confused. 82-70002

According to my interchange manual the part # is: 2537726, and it says that all 70-71 Barracuda, Challanger, Charger, Cornet, Dart, Satellite, And Valiant, but I'm sure all 67- up manual gears will work. Pittman arms would be the difference.

Interchange on that box is in fact '62-'72 A- and B-body. Starting in '65 there are two varieties; the 6-cylinder cars got a box with plain bushings and the V8 cars got a lower-friction box with ball bearings to maintain steering effort levels despite the heavier engine. The difference between the two is not so large that one would readily notice it; if you have the option of two boxes in equally good condition then sure, pick the ball-bearing one, but if you have to choose a nice bushing box vs. a worn-out bearing box, get the bushing box. Look for a box that has at least a couple of threads showing on the sector shaft adjustment screw at the top of the box, and no discernible lash/play when you rotate the input shaft back and forth.

i've found one here for $100. How do you tell the difference between the two just by looking at them? I'm starting with a /6 but as things get better i'll be installing a nasty 440. The car is being set up for a big block. Thanks for your help.8)
 
Tell us what numbers are stamped into the one you found. There were many different numbers across the interchangeable years ('62-'72); someone will have to take the numbers you report and look them up in factory parts catalogues to determine what exactly you're looking at. There is no external physical clue as to which kind of box (bushing or bearing) you're looking at.
