Can You Help A Girl Out?

-
now i tried to read thru all of those to se it it was mentioned but i didn't see it...

in you first round of pics you can see that flap in the exhaust manifold... it it is stuck in the "on" position it will divert hot exhaust gases onto the bottom of the intake and make it over heat... when its cold or with a rag make sure you can move it around freely... it should go back to one spot tho... off

Good point!

If you are standing in front of the car facing the motor turning the flapper counter clockwise will close the flapper and divert the hot air to the intake and turning it clock wise will open the exhaust. The one in my wifes 66 is dead so I just left it in the open position. It takes a little longer to warm up (still only about 5 mins when it is in the mid 30's) but it isn't that big of a deal.

That was the old broken manifold that was replaced-notice that the firewall side of it is gone. She replaced it but what you say about it needing to move is still valid.

never stop learning here on fabo......I don't know a hole lot about the slants so the flap in the manifold is new to me lol

Thank you all for so many comments & helpful advise! Gonna roll up the ole' sleeves again tomorrow and check ALL of the areas that have been mentioned. You all are so skilled! p.s... check out the Avatar...why not? Ya' got to have a good sense of humor afterall!

Bea, the more I get to know you, the more I like ya!!! :-D That last picture is fabulous (don't worry, I wasn't checkin out your butt -- I don't swing that way LOL) and believe me girl, at 5'0 I've been there myself a time or two. (Had to buy a step stool just to do a tune up on my F350 dually crew cab.)

You're getting great advice so far!

Do you have a fan shroud on that motor? It doesn't look like it in the pics, but it may have just not been reinstalled yet. Sometimes that can make them run hot too.

Thanks CudaChick...I'll check into the Fan Shroud as well.!

First things first, Burp the system just like DusterDude said, don't worry about a finding a shroud right now just burp the system and make sure you have a spring or coiled up coat hanger in the bottom radiator hose. While driving at speed the bottom hose will suck it self shut and overheat. If your still having problems then flush the whole system and if you want better cooling without finding a uncracked a shroud just replace the stock 4 blade fan with a 7 blade fan from another slant that came with AC, you can usually find them for no more tan $40 (the V8 ones are too thick). I did the 7 blade swap on my 73 and on my wifes 66 daily drivers and never had a problem even in summer when it was 102* in stop and go traffic.

Also take to Slantsixdan, there may be some other cooling tricks/issues for the aluminum blocks that he knows about.

Thanks for the help...Dan has recommended, basically the same checks as you all have and to replace the T-Stat with the SuperStat # 45358, flush the radistor with DeNatured Alcohol and use Evan's Waterless Coolant NPG+ only ( no water!) This I will be doing for sure!

looking at you pictures, i see a fairly new water pump .was this replace due to leaking ,or replaced before over heating happen?i have seen a few after market water pumps where inpeller came off or put on backwards cause no or reversed flow, witch can cause over heating very quickly.

Gonna check in the AM! Thanks!

Well Bea, if there was a prize for the funniest and most thought provoking Avitar then you're the winner hands down. Good luck on the cooling problem and Dans definetely the Man for /6's and others.

Yeah...I win! Thanks & Yes, Dan is the /6 Man! :-D

/6dan seems to know a thing or two in alot of different areas of working on cars.

he normally has all sorts of really good info.

Thank you all so much! I'm so motivated now, it's crazy good! You can bet your sweet "arse" I'll be up & at it in the AM! You all are so awesome and welcoming...makes a girl warm & fuzzy all over!

Another tip. When it gets "hot" check the temperature of the radiator with your hand (close, but not touching) and feel for any cooler spots, that'll tell you if your rad is plugged up. And that diverter flap is a bane to V8 owners too, usually gets stuck in the closed position after sitting for years.

I second the idea for an actual mechanical temp guage.I have them in my drag slant, and the 63....street slant.I may have an extra laying in the garage, so might have one for you.
Nice avitar pic!! You gotta have a slanted sence of humer when you run an early toad!! My drag car is a 62!!
