If you are standing in front of the car facing the motor turning the flapper counter clockwise will close the flapper and divert the hot air to the intake and turning it clock wise will open the exhaust. The one in my wifes 66 is dead so I just left it in the open position. It takes a little longer to warm up (still only about 5 mins when it is in the mid 30's) but it isn't that big of a deal.
