Pits can be an option, but have their own set of problems. In parts of the country around here, the ground water level can be a challenge as to keeping them dry. Also, most people probably did as a friend of mine did---board them over for safety when not in use. It collected enough fumes that one day he was on his knees on the floor cutting some metal with a torch. Next thing he knew there was a bunch of 2x 6's up on the ceiling---and on the way down.
