63 gt still wont start

Popping/ burning/ flashback out the carb is ALWAYS a sign of either timing being off, the cam being out of time, or intake valves open

Your PROBABLY just have the distributor in "180 off" but START by checking your timing marks

Do this by making, buying, getting a "piston stop": (only an example)

Unhook battery ground, adjust stop so that it will hit the piston "at some point", and install in the no1 plug hole, making sure that the piston is "down a ways"

Turn the engine by hand until it stops against the device, and make a temporary mark on the balancer directly under TDC on the timing tab.

Do the same CCW. Now you'll have two temporary marks some distance apart. True TDC will be halfway in between those marks.

NOW you can check the distributor. Pull out the stop, devise a way (long ways on a /6) to get your finger in the plug hole, or use a short length of fuel hose. If you have a compression gauge, you can use it.

Bump / turn the engine until you START to feel compression. Now watch the "marks" and turn the engine until it's say, 5 BTC or so. NOW put your distributor in ready to fire on no1. You already know how to "feel" for spark as you described. You should be able to fire it right up.
