I am putting an 8.8 from an explorer in a 72 Dart. the rear I have is 59.5" wide. I can cut about 2.5" out of it real easy and use a stock, off the shelf axle (cheap).
An 8 3/4 at stock width is 57.125" wide, converted to BBP, probably looking around 57.5".
