I am looking for some advice on installing TTI headers on my 1973 Duster. I have read through threads looking for how others installed them but have just seen people say they just slipped in and were the easiest headers they ever installed. If anyone had them just slip in, what was in their car when installed?

What would you guys recommend having in or out of the car when installing the headers? I know people also say follow the directions, but I was wondering what people have experienced while installing the headers.

Thanks

Drivers side will usually require jacking up the engine and removal of the steering gear. Pass side is much easier

If coated, leave the headers in the bags so they don't get nicked up.

The directions are really good so follow them and you should be good.

Thanks, I was sadly thinking the steering gear will have to be removed.

it takes forewer to write how to install them so i say like everyone else just read the instructions and they will slip right in:cheers: no need ot take the steeringbox out of the car:iconbigg:

Its the center link that has to be dropped. I disconnect the tie rod end on passenger's side, unbolt idler arm from k frame, then disconnect center link from pitman arm, and then swing the center link over towards driver's side out of the way.

I always pull the t bars. it only takes 10 minutes to pull them and makes life so much easier.

Agree!
I pulled the steering column but not the steering gear. Just cover the steering gear while installing them.

I am installing TTI on my Demon. I was going to install them on engine while I had it out. I will be installing engine with kframe mounted from the bottom. Will I be encountering many issues doing it this way?

when i installed mine i just followed the directions and they slipped right in.

Agree! I followed the directions to the T and they went right in. But, the car has to be pretty high up so you can slip in the headers from the bottom.

My car is a 74 Duster with a 360, 4-speed. I did have the steering column out and the t-bars out as I was restoring the car. The PS gear box is not easy to get back in with the headers installed but it can be done. But, I wouldn't take it out and put the headers in. I had to replace mine after the fact and it was a PITA.

Also, use the bubble wrap that came in the box with the headers and wrap each tube individually and that will keep them from getting scratched. It was worth the 20 minutes to do this.

Sorry it takes some work to get these things in but the directions are good. Plus, they sound and look awesome!

Wow, didn't know that pulling the steering gear (centerlink, tie rod ends) went all the way to the steering box...

Follow the directions and you'll understand the steering gear comment.

All I had removed on my Dart Sport was the oil filter and starter! Car was jacked pretty high up and I had the engine lifted well off of the mounts. But it allowed me to move it around a bit to install the headers without taking anything else out or apart. Trans cooler lines were the biggest obstacle.

904 trans and manual steering.

I jacked up the back end of the car as well. If you don't have a lift it will give you some room when you are trying to angle them in. I am assuming you have more than one set of jack stands. It helped me get the clearance I needed.

I am having an issue...read the directions, driver side, third pipe back is hanging on the power steering box.

Wish I had read about leaving the headers in the bags.....great idea....little late...bit knicked up on the black finish I paid extra for.....geez!

Still just cant get the header to clear the steering box.....suggestions?

won't sleep tonight while I try to figure out what I have botched....

Are you trying to install them from above or below? I tried from above and it kept hitting the power steering box. I then tried to install them from below with help and they came up that way and fit. It was still tough and you have to go slow but that is what worked for me.

went from below......have to think it is me.....will take your advice go slow and see if starting from scratch this morning will bring better results.....

read the other thread.. you don't have the trans in the car?

OK, Have them installed...it was all about motor position on the driver side. I actually took off the driver motor mount which was set to the inside of the mounting ears and move it forward. That allowed the motor to move back about 3/4 of an inch and it dropped in place.

Put the mount back where it started but it looks more natural installed forward of the mounting ears on the block??? Whole different discussion but if anyone has any input as to if the motor mounts are supposed to go behind the ear or forward of the mounting ears on either side let me know. I bought this car in boxes, have not worked on one of these in 30 years and it is not as easy as I remember.

Frankly the mount looks more natural in front of the mounting ears on the driver side. But I am not even sure if these mounts are original to the car?????

Anyway, back on topic, the trans is not in the car yet....car is painted, engine is not dressed but will be starting after my beer (earlier reference as to sequence of header installation, possibly other thread) and then waiting on the stall converter to show up....once that is done I am hoping all the other small pieces show up to finish this project up......hoping to fire it up labor day weekend.....drivable end of month, cali black plated by October...registration is in progres.....confidence is coming back.....

I wonder if you have a B/E body mount bracket on the drivers side.

hard to say......unless I find a similar car to compare against I will never know.

Do you have any pictures of correct versus incorrect? IF you have an email PM me and I will send you two pictures of how this mount bolts up. Perhaps you have an answer for me.....
