got my 1974 Scamp a few weeks ago, see http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=141569

I wasn't going to play with the 318 since im looking to build a 360 stroker during the next winter and hopefully get it ready for next summer, but I can't help it, this car is so fun to drive I'd like to add more power before the end of this summer.

This car is completely stock aside from 1 5/8 ceramic coated header and dual 2 1/2 exhaust. Automatic 904, 8.25 rear end with whatever gear.

Would I be wasting my money if I was to add thing like a new 4bbl carburator, intake and a mild cam?

Suggestion?

Currently only a weekdend driver, no strip.

A nice dual plane and 600 carb would certainly liven it up IMO, if you're willing to spend the cash. Also, a mild cam - already mentioned the Hughes Whiplash on another thread - would certainly bring more fun!

A good cheap upgrade would be an Eddy performer intake (small ports for the 318) they can be found for $100 used and find a decent 600 cfm carb. A cam like a Comp XE 256 would work great with stock heads and pistons too. These could be done in a day in the driveway. I say go for it.

The whiplash cam from Hughes will give you a lot of what your looking for

Edelbrock Performer intake, 600 holley vac secondary and a stock 340 cam is supposed to really wake up the little 318. But that hughes cam would probably work great too AND sound nasty.
Gearing can make a huge difference with the same motor, so keep a look out for an A body 8 3/4 rear axle since your going to need one when you build a 360 stroker anyway. If you find one, drop in some 3:91 or 4:10 and let that little 318 have some fun! I had WAY too much fun in my old 318 with a bunch of swap meet parts and 3:91 gears in a Duster.
Of course if you commute on the freeway you might want to get 3:55's instead.

thank for all that info.

ProStreetDuster, I'll be getting the 360 block from the guy that sold me the car along with an A body 8 3/4, but its an empty housing. He does have an empty 489 case that I'm trying to get also. Was thinking a spool wih 3.55 or 3.91. Not planning on long highway commute anyway.

Badart, when you suggest an Eddie Performer for the small port, do all performer intake have small port? If you compare those 2, is this what you have in mind?

Imho the best bang for the buck can be had with a better gear ratio. 3:55 is about the most I would install if you plan on any amount of highway driving. Some good drag shocks would really help weight transfer too.

IMO, look for a used performer RPM, air gap or weiand stealth, weiand 8007 or 8022 intake. 600-650 holley would be good as well.

A nice cam for a 318 is the 340 4 speed grind or something similar to a comp XE256-262H/lunati Voodoo grind.

You want more pop in it's step. converter, converter, converter... did I mention a converter... :)

Well for now I'm just looking for a few easy upgrade to keep me happy till the end of summer, BEFORE I go all out on the 360 stroker this winter. Thats when the fun will really kick in.

My 73 Dart has a 318 with mild cam, Edelbrock Performer intake and a Holley 600 cfm carb. It is embarrassingly slow. I know my rear end is a 2.76. I am going to change the rear end to spice it up right now. This winter I am going for the 408 stroker so I won't feel underpowered again.
