904 torque converter dont fit..?

hey again,
so i have another 904 trans and i was wondering if you guys know how to tell what year the trans is? the numbers on the other trans is 8713. will this one work with my pre 1966 slant six motor? my old trans that is not working is U744 on the bell housing.
