904 torque converter dont fit..?

so i have another 904 trans and i was wondering if you guys know how to tell what year the trans is? the numbers on the other trans is 8713. will this one work with my pre 1966 slant six motor? my old trans that is not working is U744 on the bell housing.

Here's the deal: In '68 (I believe) the 904 got a bigger input shaft (the one that the converter rides on) AND at the same time, they changed size of the snout that fits into the recess in the back of the crank.

So, depending on your transmission year, you may have to do what I did: I called Hughes transmissions in Arizona and had them configure me a new converter that fits the bigger (more splines) input shaft, but has the early model snout to fit the early crank rescess.

Cost me $500.00 for this bastard converter with 3,000 stall... not a bad deal, I thought.
